Here's a letter from my great grandfather's (William Spencer Carter 1841-1896) sister to his wife, Cornelia Guerrant Carter (1845-1926) while he was away in the Civil War. According to records, W.S. Carter was wounded at Gettysburg during the failed "Pickett's Charge." He was a member of the Virginia 38th, infantry division headed by Cabell. Records also indicate that after recovering from his wounds in 1863, he re-enlisted in 1864 and stayed with the infantry until the surrender at Appomattox Court House. Note that the letter's envelope is dated, January 1864. This is in error. As many people forget to change the date at the new year, Aunt Bettie did the same. Along with the letter is the following "translation" from the original holder. My wife found the letter on E-Bay for all places and purchased it for me several years ago as a present. I hope you'll appreciate this family artifact.
Ringgold, Va. Jan 1st 1864 (probably 1865 as envelope marked Jan 2 1865)
My Dear Sister,
I take the pleasure this morning to write you a few lines to inform you that we are all well and do sincerely trust that you are all enjoying good health. I have no news of importance to write. Neal how have you enjoyed yourself this Christmas. I think it one of the dullest Christmases I ever saw in my life. I have not enjoyed my self at all. I never felt as lonely in my life it seems as though I am lost. I reckon you have been in one of your kinstand (?) sprees or you would have been down this Christmas. I wrote to Brother some time ago and I have not heard any thing from you all in a long time. I think he or you one might of wrote before now. I heard Brother had lost a horse. I am very sorry and hope he will get well if he is not dead. I have not seen Ma nor none of Grand Ma?s family this Christmas. Uncle Will Howerton is safe now. He came up Christmas day. I don?t know when he will return though I expect soon. I sent Mr. Calhoun a very nice box before Christmas it _____ safety I sent it by Jim Norman of Company A. Neal, tell Vilet she must write to me. I can?t hear from her nor none of them. I would write to Pattie but don?t know the post office. I will write to Vilet soon tell her I send one of Mr. Calhoun?s letters to her. The last one I got from him every week sometimes two. Tell her to take good care of it. Neal, if nothing happens, I am coming down next spring to see you all. I am afraid to come this winter on account of my rheumatism. I suffer sometimes a great deal and then again a feel very well. Tell Brother to buy me one bale of cotton No. 10 and bring it down when he comes and I will pay him for it. Tell him to come soon and bring you. I hears nothing of his going back to the army. I hope he will never go back again everybody seems low in spirit down this away. I hope peace may soon be restored to this land and our friends may soon return to their homes in quietude. Eugenia and Pattie Will are both fat and well. You never saw a child grow faster in your life than Pattie Will. She can laugh out loud and cries after me constant. Neal please send me some strips of cotton cloth. I send you some. May god?s richest blessings rest from you and my Dear Brother excuse one for the present. My love to all the family accept for your self a portion. Come soon, write sooner. I remain your affectionate sister, Bettie.
Civil War Envelope and Letter ? 1865
Envelope is a deep gold color and very small, about 3-3/4? x 2-1/2?. Badly torn. Stamp has been cut off leaving a rectangular hole. Stained.
Addressed Jay 2 1864 from ???ggold Va [Jan 2, 1864, Ringgold, Virginia]. Addressed to Mrs. Cornelia L. Carter, Ruffin Depot, Rockingham Co., N.C.
The envelope was reused and turned inside out before this use, and the interior has written on it: Leaksville, March 2, to Mr. William Calhoun, Ringgold, Va.
The letter measures 9? x 7? when fully opened. It is discolored from age, mainly in the folds. It is addressed to ?Dear Sister? and was sent by ?Bettie.? It was written from Ringgold, Va, Jan 1st 1865. This is interesting. It makes me believe that she wrote the wrong year on the envelope. I do that every January myself (write the old year by mistake!).
Bettie mentions her brother and that she heard he had lost a horse? Talks about a lonely Christmas?.she had not seen Ma nor none of Grandma?s family this Christmas... Says Will Howerton is up now, he came up Christmas day... She sent Mr. Calhoun a nice box before Christmas? Sent it by Jim Norman of Company A? Mentions Vilet and Pattie? I?m coming up next Spring to see you all? Tell Brother to buy me one bale of cotton No. 10 and bring it down when he comes? I hear of his going back to the army? I hope he will never go back again. I hope peace will soon be restored to this land and our friends may soon return to their homes in quietude?Eugenia and Pattie Will are both fat and well?never saw a child grow faster in your life than Pattie Will?please send me some strips of cotton cloth?
Further research reveals that Elizabeth ?Bettie? Jane Carter (born about 1843) married William Calhoun. She was the ?Bettie? who wrote the letter to her sister-in-law, Cornelia Lea ?Neal? Guerrant (1845-1926) who married William Spencer Carter (1841-1896). The families lived in Rockingham County, North Carolina near present-day Ruffin and just over the state line in Ringgold, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Unfortunately, Elizabeth ?Bettie? Jane Carter Calhoun remarried before 1870 to Joseph Hill. Did her husband William Calhoun die in the Civil War or never return home? On the 1870 census, she is living with Joseph W. Hill with her daughter Eugenia Calhoun, but daughter Pattie was not living with them.
