Joshua & Fanny Willingham Powell were the parents of:

Sally Powell, who married John W. Morefield 1810 Halifax, VA, s/o Wright & Nancy (Stevens) Morefield. Fanny Powell signed the consent for Sally to marry John. John & Sally fit an 1850 Henry Co, TN census record. A Joshua Powell, who lived close by, was likely Sally's brother, Joshua (Jr.). Henry Co. borders Stewart, TN and Calloway,
      KY, where Green Morefield lived.

Nancy Powell, who married Henry Morefield 1814 Halifax, VA, s/o Wright & Nancy (Stevens) Morefield. Joshua Powell signed the consent for Nancy to marry Henry. Henry's family was in Stokes, NC in 1830 & 1840 and in Pulaski, KY in 1850. Nancy died before 1850, and Henry married an Elizabth, last name unknown (not the Elizabeth Powell who married William Morefield in Halifax, VA 1836, as some have claimed).

....."After Joshua (Sr.) died (before 1810), Fanny's children sued her in order to force her to carry out the terms of Joshua's will--Halifax VA, Plea Book 29 p. 189, 315. Another daughter of Joshua & Fanny mentioned in that court case was Polly. The rest of you may have already figured this out, but it just occurred to me that the Polly mentioned in the law suit must have been the Mary "Polly" who married James Harding Morefield in 1816. James & Polly's oldest son was named Joshua. Well, duh... James & Polly were in Rowan, NC in 1830, in Clark, IN in 1840 and in St. Clair, IL in 1850. They also named a daughter Frances, so maybe there were no lasting bad feelings toward
      Polly's mother."

GERRALD4 WILLINGHAM (JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1)4 was born August 01, 1734 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co. Virginia, and died April 24, 1792 in Halifax Co. Virginia. He married MARY JOHNSON, daughter of JOSEPH JOHNSON. She died Unknown.

      Then, from Dr. Katherine Woerner:

      Notes for MARY JOHNSON:
The following information came from Dr. Katherine Woerner and is posted on http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/2070/willingham.html belonging to Nancy Leeg Jankowski.

Court action Stephen Wood and Ann Wood Vs. Estate of Joseph Johnson of Lunenburg Co., Virginia Court, Sept 1761? Ann Johnson, daughter of Joseph Johnson ...dispute between Joseph and his son in law Stephen Wood and also with another of his sons-in-laws, Jarrell Willingham m 1855 Mary Johnson... see Lunenburg co. Court order book No.7 pages 117-119 for suit brought by Jarrel and Mary (Johnson) Willingham against Joseph Johnson, father of Mary on 3 Mar 1761 when Joseph Johnson's will was presented in court for probate, Stephen Wood, Jarrell Willingham and Joseph Williams were listed as the executor's sureties (Lunenburg Co. will book 2, p. 28.

The above court action proves that Mary Johnson, daughter of Joseph Johnson with the 1761 will in Lunenburg Co., Virginia, is the wife of Jarrell Willingham. Jarrell Willingham B. 1 Aug 1734 is shown in the Bristol Parish, Prince George Co. Birth Records as the son of John Willingham (1751 will in Lunenburg Co., Virginia) and Mary.
Dr. Katherine Woerner believes that it is possible that John could have also been married to a Mary Johnson, perhaps the sister of Joseph Johnson, son of Stephen Johnson, whose (Joseph) daughter, Mary, married Jarrell Willingham. So Mary Pate being his wife is not written in stone. It is also a possibly that he may have been married two times maybe first wife was Mary Johnson and second wife Mary Pate.

05-13-2000. This entry by Katrina M. Piper. Noting the continuing pattern that children, usually sons, but sometimes daughters, are given the middle name of their mother's maiden names, or even grandmother's maiden names. Could Pate have been the case?
