James Neeley
James Neeley was born around 1717. He married Margaret Jane Grimes on 17 May 1740 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Christ Church). The family moved to Augusta County, Virginia by 8 February 1749 when James purchased land from Ephtraim Gaussen [Ephraim Guthrie]. This purcahse was recorded in Augusta County, Virginia DB2/598-599. He bought and sold several parcels of land over his life time. in 1769 the area he was living in became a new county. Botetourt county was formed at that time. Two pieces of land were deeded, in March of 1776, one to his son William and the other to his daughter Jane who had married Philip Love. These deeds are recorded in Botetourt County, Virginia DB2/208-209, and 210. He died in Guilford County, North Carolina and was buried in the Alamace Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Greensboro.

Callie (3rd child) b. 1853 married Thomas O. Carter on December 11, 1871 in Caswell County. His parents- Richard Carter & Catherine Carter. Her parent Mother "Sally". (no father's name). I am guessing of course, but I suspect that she eloped with him since she was 17/18 and he was 44/45. They moved around a lot. In the 1880 census, Thomas is shown as age 53 and Callie is 28. John 7 was born in TN; James 4 born in Georgia; Robert 1, born in North Carolina and the daughter born later in Kentucky. The daughter Lucy married her first cousin Walter Carter s/o James T. and wife Caroline. In the 1880 census Callie is shown C. L. Carter and in the census (1870) it looks like her name is Caralee or something similar. 1860 census Sally (Callie) age 7; 1870 census Caralee ? age 17, and 1880 census C. L. age 28. The marriage is recorded in Family/Search.

JAMES GUTHRIE

to Stephanie, Andy, Brian, Gayle, Janet, me, Peggy
Good article! That's the way I understood it too. I'm still at the roadblock of who is the father of William Henry Guthrie (1816-1900+)? Jumping the roadblock, I'm genetically directly related to a provable descendant of old Thomas Guthrie and wife, Mary Cason. So are you.

Thought this was interesting and thought it was worth sharing. Maybe in the near future Family Tree DNA will find this helpful per their Y testing services and it could close the gap with genetic distances.
Meaning, per the Y111 DNA testing and between James Guthrie and Andy Carter = 108/111 in which indicates direct paternal relationship.
Per the Y111-DNA testing and between James Guthrie and Joe Carter (deceased) = 107/111 in which indicates direct paternal relationship.
Andy Carter is a direct descendant of JTC, Sr. and Martha Ann McCann to JTC, Jr. and his 1st wife Caroline Wesley to their son, Walter Raleigh Carter and his marriage to his 1st cousin Lottie S. Carter.
Lottie S. Carter was JTC, Jr's niece and the child of Callie Carter-Carter = JTC, Jr's sister.
Callie Carter-Carter was married to Thomas Oscar Carter of the Giles Carter group.
Joe Carter is/was a direct descendant of JTC, Sr. and Martha Ann McCann to JTC, Jr. and his 2nd wife Eliza Hill to their son, Edward Palmer Carter to their son, Joe Carter and so on.
Edward Palmer Carter was the half-brother of Walter Raleigh Carter and 1st cousin to Lottie S. Carter.
Callie Carter-Carter and Thomas Oscar Carter were the full-aunt and uncle to Edward Palmer Carter.
What I have stressed before and apparently love to do over and over again is that our Carter line that we share with JTC, Sr. and JTC, Jr. and between Jr's 2 childbearing wives of Caroline Wesley and Eliza Hill is that Joe Carter and his son, Dr. Stephen Carter and myself are a half match with the rest of the Carter now Guthrie gang.
When we do look at our Carter line, we are actually looking at Guthrie's and per my 1st reading and understanding of this article is that age can affect Y-DNA and also per my previous understanding and research is that the only time that the Guthrie introduction could have come in through is with JTC, Sr.
If the Guthrie introduction had come in through by the way of JTC, Jr. the Y-111 genetic distance would be much closer and more in the range of 109 and or 110 out of 111.
Why we as Carter now Guthrie's do not match James Guthrie on the autosomal again is related to this event that took place well over 200 years ago, and from what I have been told and have read is that autosomal DNA is only really viable for about 125 years, but autosomal DNA always leaves traces in layers.
Example, and by going backwards in time, I am the 1st layer and our parents are the 2nd and our grandparents are the 3rd and so on. The more we go back, the more the layers are diluted. I have been fortunate and by looking at my layers, I've been able to go back as far as the 1700's but only in certain directions and likely due to many intermarriages.
Per my oldest layers that I share with most of you, I have found the Giles Carter group/Powell's/Satterfield's/Bray's that are actually Whitt's/legitimate Whitt's/Miller's/Loftis'/Solomon's/Edwards/Barksdale's/Hodges/Williams/Wesley's. The list is long, but these are the surnames that I know that by looking you will find your own personal DNA layers.
Let me know if you have any thoughts on the article and everyone have a great weekend.
Your cousin....the DNA layers tell me so!

Ephraim Guthrie
JAMES GUTHRIE
Fri, Nov 26, 2021
to Stephanie, Andy, Janet, me
Stephanie thinks the NPE occurred between the father and mother of James Thomas Carter Sr. and that Ephraim Guthrie, son of Cason Guthrie and Dorothy Reeves, grandson of Thomas Guthrie and Mary Cason, was the culprit. Maybe so. I tend to think it was a later occurrence when Martha McCann Carter had no husband and 5 children over about a 16 year period. That brings some other Guthries into play but it remains genetically of the same family. You might save this information to your files for future reference.

to Andy, Brian, Debbie, Gayle, Janet, me, Peggy, Phil, William, Stephanie, Steven
HOT OFF THE PRESSES, THESE ARE MY LATEST Y-DNA RESUILTS AT THE TOP TESTING LEVEL OF 111 MARKERS.
THANKS TO DR. STEVEN CARTER OF GREENWOOD, SC FOR UPGRADING HIS FATHER JOE'S SAMPLE.
Y-DNA IS CONSISTENTLY MAINTAINED FOR THE FIRST TWO WIVES OF JAMES THOMAS CARTER JR. (CAROLINE WESLEY & ELIZA HILL) INDICATING THAT JAMES THOMAS CARTER JR. IS, GENETICALLY, A GUTHRIE AND ALL FORWARD DESCENDANTS ARE GUTHRIES. AS THE SAYING GOES, A CARTER BY NAME ONLY. MORE RESEARCH IS REQUIRED TO DETERMINE WHEN THE INTRUSION OCCURRED BUT THIS LATEST NEWS VERIFIES THAT IT DID OCCUR AND THAT SPANNING TWO FAMILY UNITS, WITHOUT CHANGE, IS PROOF POSITIVE THAT ANDY'S INITIIAL RESULTS FROM EARLIER THIS YEAR WERE SPOT-ON. THE CARTERS FROM WHICH ALL OF YOU DESCEND HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN GUTHRIES, AT LEAST FROM THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY UNTIL PRESENT DAY.

Ronald Burton Guthrie (Ron) lives in Ontario, Canada. His great-grandfather, James D. Guthrie, was a tobacco buyer for some of the larger tobacco manufacturers and worked the markets in and around Danville, Virginia. In 1924, he was offered the opportunity to work the Canadian tobacco markets as a buyer and he went there after the close of the American markets that year. He liked Canada and never came back. Ron has a documented paper trail to his great-grandfather, James D. Guthrie (born 1875, Halifax Co., VA.) to Alexander Guthrie to James H. Guthrie to Ephraim Guthrie to Cason Guthrie to Thomas Guthrie I (died and left will in 1786, Halifax Co., VA.).
