    • John Stewart, Longhunter 1744-1770
      January 2 at 7:24am ยท Yuma, AZ

      Brothers John and Dale Carter along with their cousin Thomas Carter had settled on the north side of Clinch River near Blackmore's Fort about 1772. It was a tense time among the scattered settlers along the Clinch River. The Carter?s land grants were surveyed for them and entered in the Fincastle Survey Book on March 26, 1774.

      On the same day, Logan, sent a raiding party against Fort Blackmore which secretly approached the fort and got within 75 yards before being discovered. Most of the men at Fort Blackmore were sitting on some logs a short distance from the gate. The Indians decided to make a bold push and enter the fort before the men could recover from their surprise. Creeping along the river bank, they were just ready to push into the fort when they were discovered by Dale Carter (1744-1774), who was about fifty-five steps from the fort and who cried, "Murder! Murder!"

      Upon hearing Carter's alarm, the men (only ten militia men were actually stationed at Fort Blackmore) ran towards the fort and succeeded in reaching the gate before the Indians. Frustrated in their designs of entering the fort they turned upon Dale Carter. One Indian shot at him, but missed him; another shot him through the thigh, inflicting a wound which rendered him too lame to escape into the fort. Another Indian ran up to Carter, tomahawked and scalped him.

      Meanwhile, John Carter b1752, brother of Dale Carter, and (later Colonel) John Anderson (1750-1817) serving as an ensign in the local militia attached to Blackmore's Fort left the security of the fort under fire to try to rescue a Dale Carter. Too late to prevent his death, they tried to prevent the Indian's scalping of the body. Anderson shot at the Indians who were involved in scalping the dead Carter, and John Carter shot at another. The Indians returned fire at narrowly missing both men. By this time, other men of the fort had climbed into the nearest bastion and had begun firing at the Indians. The Indians fled into the woods, free from pursuit due to the fort?s inadequate garrison.

      Soon after Captains Daniel Boone (1734-1820) and Daniel Smith (1757-1824) brought thirty men to Fort Blackmore to track down the Indians. Near the fort they found many tracks, but the tracks were lost in the forest and the Indians were never captured.

      As Captain David Looney (1735-1810) had been away from Fort Blackmore at his home near Kingsport at the time of Dale Carter's murder, the settlers at Fort Blackmore wanted a leader who lived nearby. They petitioned the highest officer in Fincastle County, Colonel William Preston (1730-1778), to make Daniel Boone a captain, and give him control of Fort Blackmore, Moore's Station, and Cowan's Fort. This petition was approved.

      John Carter, brother of the Dale Carter, who was killed at Blackmore?s Fort in 1774, had settled on a 400 acre tract of land on the northwest side of Clinch River, about 4 miles below Blackmore?s Fort, in Scott County in the year 1773. He had married a daughter of Joseph Blackmore and had seven children.

      One of the more tragic incidents in early Southwestern Virginia history was the death of Elizabeth Carter and her six children, by Indians in 1787. Plundering and setting fire to the Carter?s home, it reduced the bodies of his wife and children to ashes.

      R. M. Addington, History of Scott County, page 99, says: In a short time after moving to his farm, having planted his crop, and completing such other preparations as were necessary to move back to the fort, he went out one morning to listen for his horses and cattle, which had bells on, intending to collect them up prior to moving back to Fort Blackmore on the next day. This was locust year, and he went out early in order to collect his stock before the locust began their noises. He had proceeded about sixty yards from his house when he heard his wife cry out, "Oh John". Turning he saw eight or nine Indians entering his house, and at the same time they fired at him. Realizing his perilous situation, he thought it best to make his escape and go for assistance, rather than fight and exasperate the savages in an unequal contest. Hastening to the fort, he collected a company and returned to his house, which he found in flames. With some poles, his companions succeeded in pulling out of the burning coals the charred remains of his wife and six children, which they buried. When they had done this, they heard a plaintive groaning a little ways from the house, in the weeds and grass. They went to the place from whence the sounds came and found his little daughter, about ten years of age, with an awful gash across her abdomen and her entrails falling out. They carried her to the river and washed her, but she died before they finished. (Judge Wood and Peter Honeycutt?s Letter, Draper MSS 4 C 27)

      CARTER. Lancaster county
      Crest: On a chapeau gulss turned up ermine, a heron argent, beaked, legged and ducally gorged or.
      The above seal is used on the original will of Thomas Carter, gent, recorded in Lancaster county, August, 1700, also on a deed in Spotsylvania county, made by Joseph Carter in 1739, a grandson
      of Thomas, and it is also used on the will of another grandson. Dale Carter, gent., recorded in Lancaster county in 1776. By referring to the Dale pedigree and arms it will be seen that the above is not a Carter crest, but the crest of Catherine Dale, his wife, who was a daughter of Edward Dale and his wife Diana Skipwith, sister of Sir Grey Skipwith, Bart., and daughter of Sir Henry Skipwith, Bart., of Prestwould, Leicestershire, England.
      In 1653 there appeared in Lancaster county, Mr. Thomas Carter, who paid tithes upon himself and four servants. His home plantation was one he had purchased from Col. John Carter of Corotoman. It is not known, however, that there was any relationship between them. Thomas Carter was Justice in 1683 and In 1670 Deputy Clerk of the county, his father-in-law, Edward Dale, being Clerk from 1655 to 1674. Sometime prior to 1674 he married Catherine Dale, by whom he had six sons and two daughters:
      (1) Edward Carter, the eldest son, died in Lancaster in 1743, leaving sons, Thomas and William, and a wife, Elizabeth;
      (2) Thomas Carter, second son. Inherited the plantation on Corotoman River. He was a Justice from 1704 to 1728 and a Captain in the Militia. He died in 1733, leaving a wife, Arabella, and eight sons and two grandsons;
      (3) Henry Carter, third son, was a Justice from 1728 to 1740 and a vestryman of Christ Church until his death. He married prior to 1700, Anne Harris, daughter of Gany Harris, gent. He died in 1743, leaving five sons and three daughters.
      (4) James Carter, fourth son, removed to Stafford county, where he died 24 Oct., 1743. He married in 1724, Mary, daughter of Hugh Brent of Lancaster county, and left six sons and one daughter.
      (5) Peter Carter, fifth son inherited a plantation in St. Mary's parish, Lancaster county from his grandfather, Edward Dale, where he lived and died in 1721. He left a second wife named Margaret,
      and two sons and two daughters, one of each by each wife.
      (6) Joseph Carter, the youngest son, inherited a plantation in St, Mary's Parish from his grandfather Dale, where he lived until his death in 1759. His wife's name was Anne, and they had at least three sons and a daughter. He was a Justice in 1729, and in 1741 High Sheriff.
      (7) Elizabeth Carter, the elder daughter, married
      William George, who died in 1709, leaving several children.
      Thomas Carter, Sr., had also a son John, and a daughter Catherine.
