I am working on Group R1b - 08 with several connections in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties. If you can add any information I would appreciate it. The connections would be to the brothers Spencer Carter, Thompson Carter or John Ewell Carter. Spencer Carter is definitely not of the Thomas Carter of Barford line.

Jack Carter Jack Carter has a question!
      November 12 @ 6:30pm
? i UNDERSTAND, BY WATCHING AND LISTENING TO THE WEBINARS THAT MY UNCLE JACK NORMAN CARTER WILL PROBABLY NOT SHOW HIS CARTER (MALE) LINES AT ALL ON FAMILY FINDER. THAT THEN, EXPLAINS WHY ROLLIN JACK CARTER IS NOT SHOWING UP AS A COUSIN ON FAMILY FINDER. ALSO, LIVESAY IS NOT A PART OF US UNFORTUNATELY ... THE LIVESAY'S HAVE OTHER RELATIONS THAT ARE IN THEIR GROUP THAT HAVE ANDERSON, HULL, BONHAM, FITZRANDOLPH ( RANDOLPH) AND A FEW OTHERS. THEREFORE, LIVESAY IS NOT US. THE COUSINS, 4-REMOTE AND 5TH-REMOTE A LOT ARE SHOWING THE WALLEY, CARTER... ALL FROM CHESTER, PA. 1600'S TO 1700'S SHOW UP ON FAMILY FINDER... WE, NO DOUBT, PROBABLY STIR FROM THEM SOMEHOW. THEY HAVE BLACKBURN, STRINGER, WALLEY ......... I WOULD SAY WE ARE PROBABLY A CARTER PRODUCT FROM ONE OF THEM MORE THAN LIKELY ! EDWARD CARTER, WHOSE PARENTS WERE JOAN STRINGER AND THOMAS CARTER IN HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND LATE 1500'S. SOUND ABOUT RIGHT?????? ?

Can You explain to me why" i UNDERSTAND, BY WATCHING AND LISTENING TO THE WEBINARS THAT MY UNCLE JACK NORMAN CARTER WILL PROBABLY NOT SHOW HIS CARTER (MALE) LINES AT ALL ON FAMILY FINDER." what would make him not show up?

Barbara, I suspect they may be 4th cousins or more that would explain the Carter males who yDNA/FF tested not showing up in your Family Finder matches. See Group R1b - 09 for a listing of this grouping for the Carter family mentioned above. Do you have a paper trail connection to the Hertfordshire England Carter's? http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/carter/pats Barbara's family is Kit 153810.

Just thought I'd mention Spencer Carter and Verlinda Lucas, in case somebody comes here and searches on either of their names. My mitochondrial line (T2f3) goes through Verlinda, and I have FF results so I might get small segment matches with Carter project members. I'm an admin of the R1b-DF27 haplogroup project, which includes Spencer Carter's Y-DNA line (Thomas "of Barford" Carter line) and would be interested in working with someone on advanced SNP testing, especially a Big Y test.

I think Spencer's father has been proven to be Richard the Gunsmith Carter. IIRC the unknown is a generation farther back; but in any case there are YDNA matches with other lines that also descend from Capt. Thomas Carter "of Barford" (which btw was his ancestral village in the north part of Bedfordshire, not his plantation in Lancaster Co. VA). Since I posted here at the end of March, a BigY test has been ordered on kit 348762 (in group Bab* of the DF27 haplogroup project, at present) who is in that line -- though not through Spencer Carter. His BigY results should post this month, if all goes well. Are you familiar with the "Daniel's Family Tree" website of Dick Zieman? That's the best public source for genealogical info on Spencer's line that has been corrected (to some extent, anyway) with such DNA proofs as have come to light.

Uh-oh, looks like we have a mismatch; so chances are there is some incorrect info in one or the other family tree (Carter groups R1b-02 and R1b-08). The other guy in the R1b-02 subgroup who has tested a few SNPs (and matches 348762 with Z295+) is named Bennett; but there is strong evidence he was an acknowledged son of Spencer, apprenticed to and adopted by a Bennett whose name he took. There was a lot of traffic about this on the old GenForum Carter page, but Ancestry ate that, so it is no longer public. This link might help; find the people who interest you and click the links to the right (especially "Complete Bio Page") for much more detail. http://www.danielsfamilytree.com/focal.php?id=32046&cs=brown&lang=english

I will mention here that the BigY results for 348762 Carter have posted, and on their evidence I have created a new group Baba in the DF27 project. One of the three initial members (273632 Bennett) is a Spencer Carter male-line descendant, but the whole R1b-02 Carter group would presumably share the two defining SNPs for this new group. I haven't yet ordered tests for them, but after they have been vetted by a couple of other administrators I expect to do so.

Bumping this thread forward (I hope) because I have been discussing it off the forum with Frank. His Carter group R1b-08 has another member, 22975, who has recently tested Z273+. That is another line represented in my DF27 project, very anciently (but not recently) related to the Z295* lineage of the group R1b-02 Carters. I think it's just about as likely that this is the line that actually represents Spencer Carter (and by extension, Richard the Gunsmith Carter). Anyway, the matter begs for resolution; R1b-02 and R1b-08 can't both be the Capt. Thomas "of Barford" Carter line, because their respective SNPs diverged long enough ago to disprove that. (The former proof based on a match with Travis Bennett has been reexamined by Dick Zieman on his site, Daniel's Family Tree.)
