By Garry Brown: This paper is my attempt at locating the original Stow lands in Pittsylvania Co., Showing that the Stow family occupied these lands for three generations is integral to the argument that the Joel Stow who died in 1780 or so is the father of the Joel Stow who died on this same farm in 1826.

Pittsylvania County, Virginia Court Records (Orders) Book 4, 1777-1783, October Court 1778, page 175. Jonas Lawson was ordered to do roadwork on the Mountain Branch to Captain John Pigg's road. Others on the crew were Joshua Cankel, Joel Stoe, Edward Atkins, Leonard Sparks, Adam Lukey, John Lukey, James Blakely, James BIGGAR, John Walters, John Pigg, Isiah Cook, John Nosgless, Hazekian PIGG, William McGhee and Richard Prewit.
On 1 Sep 1780 Elder Joel received the Virginia Land Grant for the 192 acres. He failed to appear in court as a plaintiff in a suit in October 1782 because he was deceased. On Apri 15, 1783, we find the following: On motion of William Robertson, admiistrator of the estate, teh court ordered Thomas Boaz, Joshua Cantrell, and James Boaz to inventory the Joel Stow estate. On 11 Nov 1784, the inventory was submitted to the court and that is the entire official record of the Elder Joel Stow. We dod know from the Pittsylvania Marriage Bonds that Esther Stow signed her own marriage consent to William Robinson 2 Oct 1781. She was the only female Stow in Pittsylvania County records prior to 1799. She was listed as Esther Price Robinson in her father's will in 1792. 'PRICE FAMILY CONNECTIONS' by Lucille Payne, citing a family bible, states Esther was born 3 Nov 1753, the first child of Thomas Price and referred to her as Esther Robinson, the dec'd sister of John Price, in a 1842 law suit regarding his estate. Her father settled about 3 miles from Elder Joel's land when he moved to Pittsylvania County about 1779. She and Elder Joel would probably have married in Charlotte County [or Prince Edward] but no record has been found.
