Mary Place
Mary Place (b. 1638, d. December 1710)
Mary Place (daughter of Francis Place and Ann Williamson) was born 1638 in Old Rappahannock Co., VA, and died December 1710 in Richmond Co., VA. She married Thomas Powell on October 22, 1666 in VA Colony, son of Thomas Powell and Ann Gorsuch.
Notes for Mary Place:
The Wife of Thomas Powell, Sr. , Mary Place, was a daughter of Francis Place who was a celebrated artist from Yorkshire living in Durham before coming to Virginia. Many of Francis Place's Pen and Ink drawings are in the Tate Collections Galleries in England and the San Francisco Museum of Art. He was a student of Wenzel Hollar who taught Francis to etch. This ralation is disputed by some.
Thomas Powell's wife was identified in a deed: "Thomas Powell and Mary, his wife, sell to James Coghill for "the valuable consideration of nyne barrels of good Indian corne as also divers other condieracons" 300 acres of land on the south side of the Rappahannock River patented on September 7, 1654. Witnesses were Thomas Fogge, William Neale. Dated September 3, 1667. Mary Powell, daughter of Francis Place "doth appoint her loving friend, Mr. Daniel Gaines her true and lawful attorney to acknowledge sd. deed." Witnessed by William Wilton, the power of attorney was presented and the land purchase was completed a few days later. (Old Rappahannock County, VA, Deed Book, Volume 3, p. 317)
Mary Place had two half-brothers, James Bartlett and Thomas Bartlett identified in William Gibson's will in "Old Rappahannock Wills, Volume 2", p. 68, dated May 14, 1676 and probated February 7, 1677. William Gibson had previously married a _________Bartlett, a widow.
The will of Thomas Powell was presented by Mary Place, Caroline County, VA, Order Books, 1732-1740, page 538, June, 1739. Caroline County, VA, was created from the upper part of Essex County, VA, in 1728, and was named for Queen Caroline, wife of King George II, of England.
The will of Thomas Powell names Mary Place Powell as his executrix and is attested by the oaths of Samuel Coleman and Thomas Samuel, William Harrison, Nicholas Ware, Gabriel Long, Robert Taliaferro, and any three of these attestees were appointed to appraise the estate. All of these persons were formerly of Essex County, VA, and were associates of the Powells in that County.
Thomas and Mary Place Powell lived new Mount Church near Mount Creek, which flows across the upper end of Essex County, VA, and empties into the Rappahannock River a few miles above Tappahannock. The home of the Taliaferro family was near by and the Powell land was called "The Mount". Additional location of Thomas Powell and Mary Place Powell's land is given in Caroline County, VA, Order Book, 1746-1754, p. 128, January 15, 1748-49, "John Glanton is appointed overseer of the road from the post above Mary Powell's to the Mount Church."
The will of Mary Place Gibson Powell, wife of Thomas Powell of Essex County, VA, dated, April 11, 1754, is contained in Caroline County, VA, Order Books, 1746-1754, p. 465, died 1754, Caroline County, VA.
The will of Mary Place Powell, wife of Thomas Powell of Essex County, VA, was offered for probate on April 11, 1754 by Edward Ware and Millicent Powell, executors named therein and proved on the oath of John Regan, who swore that he saw Catherine Regan and Mourning Barksdale witness the same (Caroline County, Order Book, 1746-1754, p. 465). The will of Mary Place Powell, like that of her husband Thomas Powell of Essex County, VA, were destroyed with the will and deed books of Caroline County.
When Mary Place Powell died about 1754 in Caroline County, VA, her executors were Millicent Powell and Edward Ware, son of Nicholas Ware (Caroline County, VA, Order Book, 1740-1746, p. 349)
