      JOSEPH W. STERN SR.: 69, of West Chester died Friday, March 14, 1997, at his home. Born in Oxford, he was the son of the late Robert and Edna Phillips Stern. He lived in the West Chester area for most of his life. He retired in 1990 from M&B Cockerham in Exton, where he was a mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He was a first-class certified auto mechanic. Earlier in his life, he was employed at the former Stode?s Mill in West Chester. He was a member of the Downingtown VFW Post 845 and was a former member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in West Chester, Lodge 908. He was a racing enthusiast and built many race cars. He served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by two sons, Joseph W. Stern Jr. of Coatesville and Richard G. Stern of Downingtown; three daughters, Brenda E. Wise of Downingtown and Edna M. Roney and Jeannette G. Beam, both of Coatesville; one brother, Robert Stern of West Chester, three sisters, Sarah Cruilshank of Gap, Mary Chalfont of Downingtown and Edna May Barnett of Birmingham; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his companion, Margaret Eller. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gibby and Harry Stern. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18 at the Founds Funeral Home, High and Union streets in West Chester. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Birmingham-Lafayette Cemetery
