      Ophel Wade Yates, Jr., 84, of Summerville, SC, husband of Mary B. Yates, died Friday, April 29, 2011 at a Colleton County hospital.
      A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon, May 6, 2011 at Dorchester Presbyterian Church at 2 o?clock. Visitation will be held in the church Fellowship Hall one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dorchester Presbyterian Church, 10290 Dorchester Rd., Summerville, SC 29485.
      Mr. Yates was born January 13, 1927 in Danville, VA, a son of Ophel Wade Yates, Sr. and Dais Gardner Yates. He graduated from Danville, VA High School and was a US Army veteran serving in Okinawa. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where, in 1951, he received a degree in Chemical Engineering followed in 1971 by an MBA degree. He taught at VPI for three years. He had a twenty year career as a chemical engineer then for twenty-one years was a professor at Trident Technical College. He was a charter member and elder of Dorchester Presbyterian Church in Summerville.
      Survivors include his wife, Mary B. Danforth Yates of Summerville; two sons, Thomas Wade Yates and John R. Yates, both of Summerville; one daughter, Camilla Herold of Summerville; five grandchildren, Christopher Yates, Bryan Yates, Amy Yates, Bianca LaPaz, and Orlando LaPaz, and two great grandchildren, Hilton Yates and Brighton Yates.
