- Richard E. Funke Richard E. Funke, age 79, of Elkton, MD, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Elkton on November 30, 1935, he was the son of the late Emil W. and Ruth Gardner Funke. Mr. Funke was a veteran of the Maryland Army National Guard, Company E. He was a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College with a bachelor of science in Economics. In the course of his career in the banking industry, Mr. Funke was instrumental in founding and managing numerous banks which included, Cecil Federal Savings and Loan, where he served as founder and president; Atlantic Federal Savings and Loan, where he served as CEO and president; Susquehanna Bank, where he served as vice president on the Board of Directors; a founder of BayNet Bank; and assisted in organizing Madison Square Bank. He retired in 1999. In addition, he served as president of the Maryland Savings and Loan League; was the State of Maryland representative and Board of Directors member of the U.S. League of Savings Institutions and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, where he served two terms. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Funke enjoyed attending all activities involving his children and grandchildren. He was a very active member of Elkton United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. Mr. Funke was very involved in his community where he was instrumental in starting the Cecil County Junior Football League and an active member of the Elkton Touchdown Club. He had served as president of the YMCA and Elkton Rotary Club, served on the Board of Directors of the Cecil County Department of Social Services, and was a trustee of Tome School. Mr. Funke was Elkton Jaycees Man of the Year in 1966, and a Distinguished Alumni of Goldey-Beacom College. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sandra Reynolds Funke; sons, Matthew G. Funke and wife, Nancy, Slanesville, WV, and Barton R. Funke and wife, Andrea, Hacks Point, MD; son-in-law, Edward C. "Ted" Davies, Oakton, VA; and grandchildren, Ashley, Colbey, Gabe, Madeline, Caleb and Cierra. In addition to his parents, Mr. Funke was preceded in death by his daughter, Lorell E. Funke-Davies. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 6, 2015, at Elkton United Methodist Church, 219 E. Main Street, Elkton, MD. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, June 5, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921. Interment will be in Cherry Hill Methodist Cemetery, Cherry Hill, MD. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Baskets of Hope, or to Elkton United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home at the above address.
