I apologize for the delay in answering your post. Certainly I would never have accumulated the information that I did had people not responded to me.

The John Carter who married Mary (possibly Fleming) and had a son named Fleming is the son of Thomas Carter of Goochland (c.1680 - 1738). This John was the third oldest son of Thomas; the oldest son was named Robert. (Robert too had a son named John, but he married Judith Huddlestone.)

John, son of Thomas, left no will to be found, but there is an inventory of his estate in Cumberland County from 1773, placing his death in that year. His wife, Mary, did leave a will which mentions her children William, Fleming, and Josiah. They did have another son named John, which is proven in a land deed in Cumberland wherein it names John's (Jr.) father as John Carter. This John is whom I am descended from.
Mary Fleming married John (of Cumberland) Carter and produced John c 1735-1817, William c 1739, Josiah 1741, Nancy 1743, Fleming (1747-1833)
