In reply to: Thomas Pollard, brother to Zachariah
      Peyton Carter 2/18/14

Another big puzzle. There are at least 3 Pollards that move into Amelia Co. They seem to be tied to the King William Co Pollards.
The first Amelia Co Pollard is George. He appears to have been before 1700:
George Pollard came to Amelia County about 1736, and in July 1737 was granted a patent for 382 acres on Sandy Creek. Patent Book 7, p. 373: George Pollard, 393a., Amelia Co., adj. John Radford, John Harris & Joel Meadows, Sandy Cr. (p. 374). 9 Jul 1737. He may have been there earlier as a patent of June 1737 to John Harris states that it adjoins George Pollard; Patent Book 17, p. 314. "A Plat of the Land Patents of Amelia County, Virginia", Amelia County Historical Committee, 1987, shows those two patents; they are in the westernmost portion of the county. George Pollard's patent is separated from the Appomatttox River by only one other patent, and the Appomattox is the boundry between Amelia and Prince Edward counties. The patent is just east of present Farmville.

No currently known name for George's wife. Three kids currently listed:
      Francis b abt 1717 m Betty Phelps.
      Susannah b abt 1723 m George Foster
Joseph b abt 1725 m Leah Morris. There are currently 15 kids listed under Joseph/Leah including a Zachariah b abt 1763 who m Rhoda Johnson and Thomas b abt 1764 who m Mary Pollard 2 Jun 1781. Kids currently listed for Thomas/Mary are:
      Susannah m Samuel Wright 17 May 1803
      Letitia m John Wright 16 Jan 1805.

The Hardiman-Pike Genealogy shows 2 other children for George, a George and William, based on those names being mentioned Amelia Co deeds:
George Pollard witnessed deed of Joseph Pollard to John Wayles on 17-Sep-1765 at Amelia Co., Va.1

Carter, eventually married the niece of Joseph Haskew in 1846, who had left all of his is land holdings to his niece, Mary Elizabeth Pollard, in 1843."

How do we know this Thomas Carter is the same one who married Catherine Muse?

    • THOMAS AND JOHN CARTER OF AMELIA, VA
By Peyton Carter November 18, 2013 at 08:42:43

In reply to: Re: David Carter of Cumberland Co., Va.
      Dan Wallace 11/07/13

So you revelations about the children of David Carter (died 1803) and Jane Flippen Walton are VERY interesting indeed! It also presents a difficult set of facts for me personally.

I had long thought that Thomas Carter of Amelia Couonty, Virginia, who married Catherine Muse in 1815, was related (probably a brother) to John Carter of Amelia. In addition to a releative close proximity to their residences within Amelia, also I have found that:
      1. in 1814 Thomas Carter served as a substitute for Joseph Haskew in the Virginia Militia (during the War of 1812). Beginning in 1823, John Carter began purachsing land on the border with or from Joseph Haskew. John's son, William R. Carter, eventually married the niece of Joseph Haskew in 1846, who had left all of his is land holdings to his niece, Mary Elizabeth Pollard, in 1843.
      2. in 1815, the marriage of Thomas Carter and Catherine Muse was witnessed by John W. Foster. In 1821, the (second) married of John Carter and Oney Pollard was witnessed by John W. Foster. (I suspect that John Carter's first wife was a daughter of Stephen Wright, possibly Polly Wright, a ward of John Jeter after Stephen's death.)
      3. in 1853 in the transaction ledgers of John Carter's son, William, it mentions giving the "family best flower" and making uncollateralzied loans to two of the children of Thomas Carter, Henry and Thomas P. Carter. It seems unlikely that such transactions would have been made if there was no family relation.

I am a direct descendant of John Carter (he is my g-g-g-grandfather). However, my DNA results versus those of a person claiming to be a descendant of Thomas Carter are only a 12 out of 30 marker match. Clearly not enough to make the fraternal connection I was suspecting.

I must thank you for including the web connection to the papers of David Carter. I discovered that the Library of Virginia had a number of papers regarding John Carter as well. See one of the links below:

      http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=007-1816-005http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=007-1816-005

In this link you will see that in 1812, John Carter was a co-litigant with John Booker and...wait for it...yes...JESSE WALTON! Yes, that's right, the same Jesse Walton that is the administrator of David Carter's estate. The same David Carter whose daughter, Bestsy Scott Carter (note the middle name SCOTT as listed in the LVA documents; more research needed on this...maybe related to William Carter and Jane Smith of Powhatan)married William Smith, and son Thomas Carter married Catherine Muse in 1815.

The coincidences almost seem too large. As I see it, there are two possibilities:
      1. This is just a random coincidence, where Jesse Walton just happens to be involved with multiple Carter families, or...
      2. Perhaps the person who submitted their DNA as a descendnat of Thomas Carter of Amelia did so in an advertent error and is not actually a descendant of Thomas of Amelia

I certainly need to get some resolution on the DNA issue regarding Thomas and John, but I have already begun to look for John Carter's origins in Powhatan, and the middle name of Betsy Scott Carter, who marries William Smith, may point that way as well. As a result, maybe David does not point directly back to Thomas Carter of Goochland origins?

I am still trying to "piece together" my Pollard line backward from Sarah Pollard married James M. Edmonds in Wilkes county, Georgia, in 1849.They are buried with markers in the Community(Silvey) Cemetery at Rayle, Wilkes County, Georgia.
I did a lot of my genealogy research before the Internet so I am definitely into proofs and documentation instead of just "grabbing" someone else's tree. However, living in East Texas, I did not make a lot of progress until some more books were published on the area of Georgia around Wilkes County.
