Goochland deed [DB 15/180] is dated 19 Jan 1789 and the grantors are David Webster and his wife Judith and Mary Witt widow and relic of Edward Carter deceased. I assume that Mary Witt was a party to this deed because she had a dower right to the property.

in his will, dated 28 December 1748 and recorded 18 April 1749. He names his daughter, Judith Carter, and states that his wife, Mary, might be

GOOCHLAND - EDWARD AND DAUGHTER JUDITH
I have been trying for a considerable time to discover the chain of ownership of the original Thomas Carter property located on the James River near the mouth of Beaverdam Creek in Goochland County, Virginia. I hoped that this information would provide some insight as to the identities of the Charles Carter and Judith Carter whose 1756 marriage was recorded in the parish register by the Reverend Mr. William Douglas.
We know that the 100 acres of land owned by Thomas Carter was deeded to his son Edward in 1735 [DB 2/90] and was described in Edward's 1748 LWT [DB 5/534] as being comprised of two parts of approximately 50 acres each. The one part was located between the river and Beaverdam Creek and the other part was located north of the creek. The will devises that part on the river to daughter Judith and the other part to any unborn child should his wife be pregnant and should there be no additional child then the other part to his daughter Judith as well.
It appears that there was another child, a son given the name Edward, who assumed ownership of the land north of Beaverdam Creek. This is evidenced by two deeds written in 1795 by Edward Carter to Shelton Harris [DB 16/393 and 437] that describe two parcels of land on Beaverdam Creek totaling 65 acres.
I have just recently discovered a deed that I believe is definitive in identifying the other part of the land devised to daughter Judith. This deed identifies the husband of Judith and further identifies the man who Edward's widow married subsequent to his death. The Goochland deed [DB 15/180] is dated 19 Jan 1789 and the grantors are David Webster and his wife Judith and Mary Witt widow and relic of Edward Carter deceased. I assume that Mary Witt was a party to this deed because she had a dower right to the property.
This proves that the 10 Apr 1770 marriage recorded by Douglas was between David Webster and Judith Carter, daughter of Edward Carter and Mary Bullington.
It does not prove the identities of Charles Carter or Judith Carter who's marriage was recorded in 1756 but it does increase the likelihood that Judith was the daughter of Thomas Carter, Junior of Fleming Park Creek.
