Phil Carter:
So the family farm of Edward Palmer Carter (my grandfather EP as he was called), is located about 1/2 mile down Va state rte 872, (aka Carter Trail, in Sutherlin, Va. Sutherlin is located about 14 miles from Danville and about 22 miles from South Boston off of hwy 58. He owned approx 300 acres on both sides of the road. I remember there being 3 sharecropper houses on the property only one of which is still standing. It is the first house when you turn on to Carter Trail. This property was purchased by my grandfather from the Hoge family. And was once a plantation owned by Dr Hoge, whose father was Pastor Hoge preacher to Jefferson Davis in Danville. Also, the property is located on what was once known as Ferry Road which ran from South Boston to Danville. The ferry part came because there once was a ferry to cross the Dan River along the route. The original slave's house/cook house from the plantation is still standing. The plantation house burn down right after the civil war. There is a cemetery (Hoge's Family) on the property and has several markers including 2 of Dr. Hoge's sons who were both killed on the same day in May 4 1864 but in different battles. The farm was given to EP [Edward Palmer Carter] by his uncle Joe's who owned it originally. I never met my great grandfather James T, as he passed before I was born. I did however spend time at the old home place which is located at the end of what is now called Hackman Trail. It was purchased by O.R. Hackworth, who founded Old Dutch Supermarket in Danville. I was told at one time there was 10,000 + acres in his farm. It ran from the Dan River in the south to somewhere down hwy 656. I know we (Carters) had farms all up and down that road all aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Grandpa Carter was raised by his Uncle Joe and Aunt Mildred Groom Carter as his mother died when is was a baby and James was quite old. He had a sister named Aunt Tulloch. She was raised by Uncle Walter Carter. Walter had a farm adjacent to grandpas. You mentioned the Powells. One of grandpas best friends and neighbors was named, of course, Carter Powell. He was married to a Mary Carter I think so we probably were related. I do know grandpa sold him some additional property off of 656.
Two other things I remember, one is grandpa gave 1 acre to Hackberry Baptist church so that the black people (share croppers) could have a place to worship. And he built a one room school house on his property so all the Carters around could get elementary education. My Uncle, Aunt and Father all went there for some period of time before they went to Turbeville for their schooling.
As for me, I lived there for a year or two, then spent every summer there until I went into high school.
Great Uncles were Augustus C, Napolean B, Walter R, Percy, Nancy, Aunt Tulloch, James T Jr. ... I only met or remember Aunt Tulloch and Uncle Walter.
Hope you have a great holiday season....,
Phil Carter
