      THE COCKE'S OF VIRGINIA

      John, s/o John2Cocke/Cox married Mary?; born c 1670; died 1710. Issue William,4, James4, died 1713; Martha4, Married Wilkinson; Robert 4 (No more is known of these individuals. The family is said to have lived at Dutch Gap and to have been the ancestors of the Coses of Chesterfield. The Cockes became also a very prominent family in Goochland (See Meade's 'Old Churches').
      There is also on record the will of William Cox3, dated 10 Feb 1711, probated June, 1712 which mentions son Stephen, daughters Martha, Mary, Prudence, Judith, Elizabeth, and wife SARAH. In Goochland the will of Sarah Cox, dated 26, Mar 1726, probated 20 Jan 1747 She mentions Stephen, daughters Edith, Martha, Elizabeth, Mary, Prudence, and Judith. She appoints Henry Wood her executor whose handwriting is identified as the Clerk of Goochland County at that date and father of Col. Valentin Wood) who married Lucy Henry, and was the grandfather of General Joseph E. Johnston, Beverly.....(See Documents)
