      THE VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY VOLUME 30 YEAR ENDING 31 DECEMBER 1922 James Stevens; Two of his daughters, Ann Oliver and Margaret married sons of Theodorick Carter. Dr. Walter Bennett and Theodorick Carter were among the gentlemen designated to take the first census of Halifax County, since published by the government. Previous efforts had failed because of the belief that the census was connected with a scheme to increase taxes.

      James Stevens hold a debt for Philip Carter. Philip and James Stevens reach an agreement, that payment of this of Philip Carter, would be covered by some work of William Younger. Stephens dies and his administrator, Scott is held responsible for debt balance to Stevens. Philip sues estate of James Stevens for balance due on his debt..
