[End of Record]
1. Bell Branch Plantation was the home of Thomas William Trent (1821-1903) & his wife Catherine Ann Lancaster Gannaway, located in Buckingham Co., VA. The Gannaway and Newman family of Belmont, the Page family of Caryswood, and the Trent family of Bell Branch, were the prominent plantation owners in Buckingham County and all were located within three miles of each other near present day Dillwyn, Va. In nearby Cumberland County was another Page - Trent family plantation called Union Hill, along with Alexander Trent's gristmill on Hatcher's Creek. These three families were all related and during the 1800's they employed a large number of people to work their plantations.
In 1671 a British Navel Office named Miles Cary received a grant for 38,000 acres in Henrico County. He passed 14,000 acres of this land to his great-grandson, Archibald Cary (1741-1787). Archibald built a plantation called Buckingham and this may have been the source of the name when Buckingham County was created in 1761. His sister married Col. David Bell and Archibald gave them part of his land for their plantation, which they named Belmont. Next he gave his daughter Mary and her husband, Maj. Carter Page, land which they called Union Hill. This couple willed Union Hill to their son, John Cary Page, who gave part of this to his son Edward Trent Page. Edward built his Half-Way Branch Plantation (later renamed Caryswood) on this property. As Henrico County was divided all of these plantations became part of Buckingham and Cumberland counties.
