      Birth: Apr. 17, 1943
      Pittsylvania County, Virginia, USA
      Death: Nov. 11, 1962
      Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, USA

Mr. Freddie Wells, 19, of 45 Selma Avenue, Danville, VA appeared to have "frozen" in his tracks at the time he was struck and killed by a train at the Edgewood Drive grade crossing in Danville Sunday morning at 1:28.

Police gave this version as told by Engineer Lyle Scruggs thus spiking first reports from the scene of the accident that the youth was walking toward the train when he was struck.

Scruggs was quoted by detectives as saying during a followup investigation thay young Wells "just stood there looking at the train--I didn't see him move at all".

Scruggs the Engineer of south bound passenger train Number 47 pulling 13 coaches, was quoted as saying he first saw the youth some 10 car lengths away as he sounded the crossing blow on his horn. He immediately sounded short blasts and applied the emergency brakes. Officiers said the victim was knocked 195 feet beside the tracks. The train stopped within its length.

Police determined that Wells had eaten a short time before at the Chicken Cafe and his actions appeared normal. He apparently was on his way home when the accident occurred.

The youth was born in Danville and was a son of Bradley Beverly Wells and Gertrude Bell Shields Wells.

All of his life was spent in and around Danvlle, and he was of the Baptist faith. He was in the senior year at George Washington High School and he would have graduated in February.

Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister Mrs. Walter G Collie of High Point, NC and two brothers David Sidney Wells of Danville and Harold D Wells of Oakland, CA.

Funeral services were conducted at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville by Reverend Carey R Moser. Interment was in Highland Burial Park in Danville.
