Abner was born on 24, March 1804. He died on 28 May, 1882. His wife, Ann Giles was born on 9 June 1807 and died on 1 May, 1884. They had 11 children, one of whom was Rebecca Ann Mahan, born 12 Feb. 1835 and died 20 August, 1907. Rebecca was my great grandmother. Rebecca married Lt. Col. William Henry Ramsey, my great grandfather. Rebecca and William Henry are buried in a family cemetery on Rt. 644, Cooksburg Rd. in Pittsylvania Co. I help to care for this cemetery. I am attaching pictures of Rececca Mahan, Col William Henry, their gravesite and their marriage license.

Photo came into my possession several years ago...via Mary Jane McDaniel. She had it copied in Waco, Texas, and sent to me. Pictured in the photo are reported to be Abner and Ann Giles Mahan. Researcher Eveline Anderson wrote that she had seen this as a tintype and comments on the cap. Any Giles or Mahan researchers out there that can comment on this couple? (Abner 1804-1882 m. William Edward Ramsey John Wilson Mahan: James Lanier Carter has John and Matilda Ann Cook marrying on 15 Dec 1853

He was a Confederate soldier and died in action at the battle of Gettysburg. The obituary of his son, John Albert Mahan, said that his father died a prisoner during the civil war in Fort Delaware Prison. The death records of Pittsylvania County, Virginia state that the following children of John W. Mahan died in September, 1862, in Pittsylvania County of diphtheria: Ida F., age 1, Christianna, age 4, Margaret, age 6, and Wilmoth, age 8 as reported by their grandfather, Abner Mahan.

Matilda Ann Cook Mahan started her first marriage to Mahan with much hardship. She had five children in 9 years. They were born in Chatham, Pittsylvania County, Virginia between November 1852 and April, 1861. Then came the war. Probably, while her husband was off fighting in the war, she lost her first four children to diphtheria in six days in the terrible month of September, 1862. The following year she lost her husband, John Wilson Mahan, in the battle of Gettysburg.
Matilda survived the best she could for the next 9 years alone raising her only surviving son, John Albert Mahan. In 1871 she remarried Harmon Cook IV (her 1st cousin) who was a 45 year old widower. Matilda was 40. Two years later they left their extensive family behind and moved to Fort Worth, Texas. Matilda had two more children by Harmon Cook, IV in Texas. (one was Vivian and the other may have been Nannie). Anna Evans in Piedmont Lineages, Vol. 17, #1 says Martha Cook Mahan Cook also had a daughter Salley who remained in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the great-grandmother of Fred Blair of Gretna, Virginia.

On 24 Oct 1871 when Matilda Ann was 39, she second married Harmon COOK (17) , son of Thomas COOK (ca 1796-) & Nancy Ann BOLLING (10) (ca 1805-), in Pittsylvania County, VA. Born on 5 Sep 1825. died on 15 Oct 1915 in Keller, TX. Buried in Bourland Cemetery, Keller, Texas. Lived in Moved To Keller, Texas in 1882.

Living with son John Rufus at time of 1930 Census; Mine is Rececca Ann Mahan, so I guess we are fourth cousins? My dad knew many of the Mahan's in Pittsylvania Co., but I have not known any in my area of Virginia. I think they were McMahan's a generation or two or three before Abner.
