The original is nearly all in one paragraph, so I have broken it up. The parenthesis ?land excepted? is original, and so is the series of dots between Negro and man. After the usual preamble, John Link said (except for my parentheses) Item To my beloved wife Mary during her natural life the land and the plantation whereon I now live. Five Negroes, to wit, one Negro.....man named Mountain, one other named Barton, one boy named Charles, one woman named Silvy, one other woman named Hannah with all my household and kitchen furniture, four horses, three cows, five sheep and ten hogs. Item I give to my son James Adam one Negro boy by the name of Claiborne, one (illegible) and one feather bed & furniture to him and his heirs (illegible; a whole line is scraped out on the film) that the land slaves (?) mentioned shall belong to my son James Adam to him and his heirs forever. Item I give to my son Thomas one feather bed and furniture to him and his heirs. Item I give to my daughter Jane one hundred dollars to be at her disposal forever. Item I give to my son Jesse one hundred dollars to be at his disposal forever. Item I give to my daughter Susanna one Negro woman named Lucy, one horse and saddle and a feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item I give to my daughter Nancy one Negro woman named Mary, one horse and saddle, one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. It is also my wish and desire that the balance of my estate not otherwise distributed together with the balance of the property (land excepted) that is willed to my wife after her death shall be equally divided between my several children, to wit Elizabeth Turner Frances Guthrie Sarah Turner Polly Oliver Jane Oliver Susannah Link (with an H this time) Nancy Link Thomas Link and James A. Link. I do appoint my friend William Stanfield and Robert Oliver and my son Thomas Link my executors to act and distribute agreeable to this my last will and testament. William Turner In the next entry the will was ordered to be recorded. William Stanfield and Robert Oliver were appointed executors, ?liberty being accorded to the other executor therein named to join in the probate thereof when he shall think fit.? Security was given by James Warrin (so spelled), William Link and James Turner. John Wimbish as clerk signed here. The court order wasn?t dated, but the following entry in the book was dated 25 Oct. 1817, so that narrows the date range for John Link?s death. The court order also specifies whether this was John Link Sr. or Jr., but I couldn?t read the abbreviation. The index to Halifax wills says this is John Link, Sr. I don?t know why Jesse Link was not listed with the ?several children,? but I went back to look, and he really isn?t there. There is no other son in the list that could represent him. I can?t see that the name Jesse in the item above could be read as anything else; it has a long S plus a normal S, as so often at that time. Will Book 11, pp 159-161. Inventory of the estate, made 14 November 1817. No total value was mentioned, and I didn?t add up the individual estimates. Here are the slaves.
