      Thomas was one of 11 children born to James & Evaline (Oakes) Oakes. His parents were first cousins. Their fathers, Elliot & Lemuel Oakes, were brothers and the sons of William H. Oakes & Elizabeth (Elliot).
      Thomas enlisted in the Confederate Army on April 4, 1861, with his younger brother, John Kerr Oakes. Thomas held the rank of 3rd Sergeant in Co B, 38th VA Infantry, PA Vindicators. He was wounded in Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. He died one month later in a Union hospital.
