These sons, not living harmoniously with their step-mother, were sent to Hanover county to learn the carpenter's trade with Francis Smith, Col. William Preston's brother-in law. Both sons served as soldiers during the Revolution, and finally settled in Kentucky. [2]

Breckenridge Family Robert Breckenridge Robert was a justice of Augusta and Sheriff in 1753 and was one of the first justices and lieutenant colonel of militia. Robert was in active service on the frontier 1759-61. In 1779 his heirs received bounty land for his services in 1756 commanding a company attached to the 1st VA Regiment, and also under Col. Andrew Lewis against the Shawneaw. He married 1st Mary, d/o Robert Poague, of Augusta and 2nd, Lettice, d/o John Preston Robert died in Botetourt in 1772.
