    • Louise Reynolds Witman, 97, of Nottingham, died Sunday, May 19
Louise entered this world during a winter snowstorm and left it to return to God on a warm spring morning. She was born February 9, 1922 to the late John J. and Mabel (Whiteman) Reynolds in Sylmar, PA. At age 7, she moved with her parents to the farm near Nottingham overlooking ?The Barrens? (now Nottingham County Park), where she spent the rest of her life and raised her own family.
She graduated from Oxford High School, class of 1940 and attended classes at West Chester Teachers College until her father died and it became necessary for her to support her mother and sister. Louise worked in the office of Conard-Pyle, West Grove, PA until her marriage on Easter Sunday 1944 to Horace W. Witman. Later when her children were in school, she returned to work as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service, Nottingham branch, retiring in 1992.
She became a member of Nottingham (Greenstone) Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the Women?s Association. Louise was the second woman ordained as a Ruling Elder in the United Presbyterian Church by the congregation at Nottingham. For several years she volunteered as an election official in West Nottingham Township, when elections were held in Fremont Grange Hall.
Creativity was another talent Louise was known for. From gifts to Christmas decorations to floral centerpieces, her hands translated her imagination into many lovely objects. She could see how to combine common weeds, wildflowers and other growing plants into beautiful bouquets for her home and friends. She loved music, playing the piano and singing. Skilled at sewing and needlework, for many years she made her young daughters matching hand-smocked dresses. Although preparing food was not among her favorite activities, Louise?s home-made desserts and baked goods were scrumptious.
Louise is survived by her one daughter, Elaine Pennell (Dale); one son, John William; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Taylor (James), Gregory Pennell (Alison), Randall Pennell (Erin), Jeffrey Kirk (Elaine) and Lauren McComsey (Jeremy); seven great-grandchildren, Zachary Pennell, Claire Taylor, Jimmy Taylor, Joseph Kirk, Brooklyn McComsey, Kathleen Pennell and Kirk McComsey; one great-great-grandchild, Allielynn Mullholand; two step-children, Amber Taylor and Jake Leonard; one sister, Ann R. Wilcher of Charlotte, NC; and an ?honorary? daughter, Vildiz Onay Ediger of Ankara, Turkey, an American Field Service exchange student who lived with the Witman family for the 1963 ? 1964 school year; and Louise?s precious cat, Molly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace and daughter, Hope Ann Kirk.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at Nottingham (Greenstone) Presbyterian Church, 497 W Christine Rd, Nottingham, where friends and family may visit from 1 ? 2:00 pm.
Interment will be in Brookview Cemetery, Rising Sun, MD, alongside Horace and Hope.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Calvert Manor for the exceptional care they provided Louise during the final two months of her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Louise?s memory may be made to Calvert Manor Nursing Home, 1881 Telegraph Rd., Rising Sun, MD 21911.
Arrangements are being handled by the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., Oxford, PA.
