Aulcey's widow, Bernettie, stated in her widow's pension application that Aulcey was a Civil War veteran, having served in Company A, 1st Regiment, Alabama Volunteer Cavalry. Unfortunately, the Military Department was unable to find a record of his military service, and Bernettie's pension application was ultimately denied.

Based on research conducted by Alan Pitts, the Military Department may have failed to sufficiently investigate variations in spelling for Aulcey's name and, as a result, may have overlooked his record. Mr. Pitts indicates that there is an A. A. Castro listed on the rolls for the Company D, 1st Regiment, Alabama Cavalry. The said A. A. Castro having not otherwise been found in Alabama in any other public record during the time period in question, Mr. Pitts suggests that his name was likely recorded in error and that he and A. A. Carter are more than likely one and the same person. (Personal communication with David E. McCarley, January 19-21, 2013.)
