      LAKE CITY Ms. Margaret L. Carter, 97, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov 3, 2008, in her residence after a long illness.
      Ms. Carter was born in Lee County on Jan 28, 1911. She was a daughter of the late James Vernon Carter and the late Lavilla Harris Carter. She was a member of Lake City First Baptist Church where she served God all her life. Ms. Carter was a Sunday-school teacher, and was the oldest and longest standing member, having served for 79 years after joining the church in 1929. She was a graduate of Coker College, a member of the Daughters of the Revolution and spent her summers at Ridgecrest. Ms. Carter was well traveled, having been to most countries in the world. She wrote the history of Lake City, the history of the Lake City First Baptist Church and wrote a column for the Lake City News for many years. The family of Ms. Carter would like to extend a special thank you to her caregivers, Sheryl Singletary, Jessica Singletary and Delores Dollard for their compassion shown to Ms. Carter in her times of need. Survivors include three nieces, Virginia Ginny Nettles (Wyatt) of Lake City, Carolyn Hatchett (Marion) of Sewanne, Tenn., and Norman Parrish (Walter) of Laurinburg, N.C.; and two nephews, Warren Carter (Ren) and Harris Carter Jr. (Beryl), both of Lake City.
      Graveside services for Ms. Carter will be in Lake City Cemetery.
