In Reply to: alleged Jesse Carter married to Elizabeth Montague by Holly Hampton of 22546

Jesse Carter did indeed marry Elizabeth Montague late in the 18 century although I have been unable to find a record of the marriage. This is proven by the wills of Thomas Montague and Jesse Carter that you will find included in a Chancery Case in Cumberland County from 1852 filed by Carter M Gilliam. This case identifies Jesse Carter and his wife Elizabeth Montague and their children:

      Thomas Carter died 1842 unmarried
      Samuel Carter died 1838 unmarried
      Everard Carter
Elizabeth A Carter, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth married Charles M Gilliam bond dated A26 Feb 1826
Elizabeth M (Betsy) Carter, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth married John A Hudgins bond dated 25 Jan 1830
Sarah M Carter, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth married William L Toler bond dated 18 Mar 1839
Mary A Carter, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth married Joseph W Palmore 04 Dec 1741

There is also a Cumberland County Deed[DB 27/574] wherein the legatees of Jesse Carter convey to Everard Carter the land belonging to the estate of Jesse Carter. The parties in addition to Everard Carter are John A. Hudgins, Elizabeth M. Hudgins, William L. Toler, Sarah M. Toler, Carter M. GILLIAM and Joseph W. Palmore of the County of Cumberland.

I know of no other Jesse Carter in this area except the son of Charles and Judith Carter. I will attempt to tie the land from the estate of Jesse Carter to Charles and Judith but without other proof I can only speculate that Jesse is in fact the son of Charles and a great grandson of Thomas of Goochland.

Comments: I believe we are cousins. John A. Hudgins and Elizabeth Montague Carter had a daughter named Sarah Isabella "Bell' Hudgins, who is my ggrandmother. She married Willis Granville Sanderson in Cumberland and they moved to Nottoway County.
