John McClanahan Lewis, Jr., the son of John McClanahan Lewis, Sr., and his wife Susan Madison Bowyer, was born November 29, 1837, in Franklin County, Alabaman. He immigrated with his parents to Montgomery County, Texas, in about 1842.
He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a member of the Ninth Infantry (Nichols'). Following his service in the Ninth, he was mustered into Company B, 24th Texas Cavalry at Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 20 by Colonel Franklin C. Wilkes. John rode to Arkansas with his company, where he was dismounted with the others. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on December 1, 1862. He fought in the Battle of Arkansas Post and was captured with the other members of his company. Since he had been promoted, he was sent up the Mississippi River to Camp Chase, Ohio, with the other officers of the regiments which fought at Arkansas Post. He arrived there on January 30th. John was held in prison until April, 1863, when he was forwarded to City Point, Virginia, to be exchanged. After the exchange, he once again mustered into Company B and as a member of the 24th/25th (consolidate), "Granbury's Texas Brigade" participated in the Atlanta campaign where he was captured on July 21st. During his captivity, he was transferred to the military prison at Louisville, Kentucky and appears on the prison rolls there.

John returned to Montgomery County after the war, where on November 15,1865, he married Martha (Mattie) C. Woodson, the daughter of Dr. Creed Woodson and Mary Cook. He died April 8, 1908, and is buried at Willis City Cemetery in Montgomery County.

He married Susan Ann Madison Bowyer [Boyer] on 18 September 1831 in Fincastle, Virginia.
On Sunday, 23 April 1848, Green Wood recorded in his travel journal: [It is] 50 miles from Montgomery to Houston, nearly South course. Went from Montgomery nearly East five miles through rich prarie with pinewoods in Sight on each Side crossed a lttle creek & came to piny wood gravelly lands mixed with with oak & hickery & post oak to West San Jacinto a small Stream large enough in High water for flat Boats 8 miles east of Montgomery, passed into pine timber, tall Shortleaf pine mixed with oak of all kinds near this creek or little river & one Small Black Prarie with pine & gravel on each Side & from there through pine Woods two miles to General Lewis, who has rich Black Prarie & cane land on San Jacinto adjoining the pineywoods Stayed with him that night, Sunday night. Says there is a League of land adjoining him 3/4 of which is rich Black Prarie & cane land & the Balance pine land. Monday morning 24th: Still about 45 or 50 miles from Houston on our way to Trinity River and will go Through the league above mentioned which belongs to Neil Martin [of] Nacogdoches. The land two miles South is Said by Genl Lewis to be poor pine land for twenty miles towards Houston, a new road passes through it. Genl Lewis Showed us Through the League of land. We saw the finest Black Prairie we have ever passed through, 400 or 500 Acres lying finely in one unbroken piece & 200 or more adjoining with only a Small Bottom between. From what we saw & what he told us, Think it the best league of land we have seen. . . .
By deed dated 9 April 1849 in Montgomery County, Texas, Neal Martin of Nacogdoches County sold to John McClanahan Lewis and his wife Susan M. Lewis of Montgomery County, for the sum of $10,000, his entire headright league of land in Montgomery County, except a survey of 320 acres (4,108 acres) on the eastern end sold earlier to William Hulon. Witnessed by Jonathan Stark Collard and N. W. Hulon, recorded 28 June 1849.
