William McClanahan was born January 26, 1783, in Botetourt County, and was a soldier in the War of 1812. His war record in the National Archives states he "enlisted in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, Virginia, July 11, 1813, and served until October 10, 1813, as Private in the Virginia Militia under Captain Joseph Hannah and Colonel James McDowell. The Veteran died March 26, 1866, in Craig County, Virginia, at the age of 83 years and two months. His widow applied for pension under the Act of March 9, 1878, and the claim was allowed, *her residence being Craig County, Virginia*. She was 78 years of age at the date of application.

William McClanahan's Will was written 20 Nov 1862, and is found in Will Book A, page 438, in the Craig County Courthouse. He names his wife, Margaret, and his seven children.

Margaret Walker, known as Peggy, was the tenth child of George Sr. and Margaret (Hefner) Walker. She was born in Botetourt County, about 1799, soon after her parents arrived in the county. Here Margaret grew to be a young woman and the marriage records of Botetourt County show that on May 28, 1818, she was married to William McClanahan. They established their home on the Moccasin Hollow Road, just a few miles from where she was born.

She lived the rest of her life here and on November 12, 1881, she died and is said to be buried in the family plot on a hill above their home beside her husband. Only three engraved stones could be found here, one for William McClanahan, one for their son James, and one for James' daughter Bess. There were at least three other stones, which were said to be children of James.
