Charles Ewell Carter, the son of John Ewell Carter and Elizabeth R. Barnes originally of Virginia, was born on January 10, 1830 in Grayson County, Kentucky. His paternal grandparents were Charles Ewell Carter and Keziah Walters. His maternal grandparents were Josiah Barnes and Elizabeth Barron Trammel. He was married twice.

His first wife was Mary Elizabeth Barnes, the daughter of William Barnes and Elizabeth Templeman. She was born on September 21, 1830 in Grayson County. They were married there on February 6, 1851. Although she was shown as dying on July 20, 1878 and being buried in the Hanging Rock Cemetery in Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky, she is apparently shown as his wife in the following 1880 Census of Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky. This records shows Charles Ewell Carter's household consisted of: Chas. E., a farmer, age 50; his wife Mary E., a house keeper, age 47. Other household members were: Rhoda E. Carter, listed as Other, age 43; Susan M. Stone, listed as daughter, age 11; and Martha J. Carter, sister of Charles, age 38. (Susan M. Stone was possibly a granddaughter instead of a daughter. - VPB)

Mary Barnes and Charles E. Carter were the parents of the following children born in Grayson County:
      1. Martha - b. 18 Nov 1851 / d. bet 1851-1855
      2. William S. - b. 9 Feb 1853 / d. 9 Feb 1853
      3. Sarah - b. 22 Mar 1856 / d. we Mar 1856
      4. Child - b. 21 Jul 1858

His second wife was Rhoda E. Harrell, the daughter of Daniel Harrell and Margaret Davis. Although she was previously married to Gus Franks, she shows up in the 1880 census as Rhoda E. Carter. She was born on January 10, 1837 in Grayson County. They were married after 1880.

Charles Ewell Carter died on August 21, 1910. He was buried as Charles E. Carter in the Duff Churchyard Cemetery in Duff, Grayson County, Kentucky. His wife Rhoda E. Carter was buried there with him after her death on January 2, 1913.
