      James was one of four children born to Charles Oakes & his wife, Sarah (Haley). He was born around 1730 in Orange Co, VA, and died February 25, 1805 in Henry Co, VA. James supplied beef during the American Revolution and is recognized by D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution)

      The name of his first wife is unknown. Their 3 children: Hezekiah, Josias, Laban Oakes #68900926

      James married his 2nd wife, Rebecca (maiden unknown), in about 1770 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. Their 4 children: (1) Elizabeth "Betsy", b. about 1780 Pittsylvania Co, VA; d. about 1860 NC; married James B. Hopper; 15 children (2) Polly, b. about 1777 Pittsylvania Co, VA; married Joseph Goodwin (3) Sally, b. about 1775 Pittslyvanila Co, VA; married Willima Pulliam (4) James Jr., b. about 1771 Pittsylvania Co, VA; married Elizabeth "Betsy" (LeGrand); 6 children

      Last Will; Will Book 2, pg. 127, Henry Co,VA Being at this time of sound mind & sense & memory but calling this my Last Will & Testament utterly working & disannuling all other Wills by me heretofore made, do dispose of the worldly estate of which it has pleased God to bless me. I direct that all my just debts be paid. I hand unto my son James Oaks all the tract of land I now live upon on Smiths River in Henry Co, containing by estimation 226 acres, it being the same tract I purchased of William Price during the life of my said son James Oaks, & after his deceased to his lawful heirs, which land I give to them & their lawful heirs forever. I give the land I hold on the south side of Smiths River in Henry Co., containing 124 acres by estimation, it being the land opposite to the above mentioned tract, together with all the property I have, both real & personal, to be equally divided among my following children to wit: Betsey Hopper, Sally Pulliam, Polly Goodwin. Item I give unto my son Laban Oaks, 25 pounds currect money of Virginia; item I give to Hezekiah Oaks, 25 pounds of currect money of VA; item I give to my son Josias Oaks, one dollar.
