      Monroe Robentile McClanahan (1843-1923)
      D17 Monroe Robentile McClanahan, born March 7, 1844 in Ripley, Brown County, Ohio; died December 3, 1923 and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mt. Ayr, Ringgold County, Iowa; married September 19, 1865 Sarah Isabelle Struthers in Warren County, Illinois. Isabelle was born on September 26/27, 1843 in Monmouth, Illinois, died September 20, 1893. Isabelle is also buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Mt. Ayr, Iowa. Five children.

      Monroe Robentile McClanahan was born in Brown County, Ohio, on March 7, 1844 and died in Caldwell, Kansas at the home of one of his two sons, Dr. William A. McClanahan on December 3, 1923.

      When Monroe was eleven years old (1855), the family moved to Monmouth, Illinois. In 1864, he volunteered as a soldier in the Civil War and served in his brother's (William Steele McClanahan) Infantry (the 138th Illinois Infantry, Company A) until the end of the war.

      After the Civil War, he then returned to Monmouth, Illinois. On September 19, 1865, he was married in a double wedding to Sarah Isabel Struthers, along with his brother, (D15) Francis Marion McClanahan who married Elizabeth Foster. In 1872, he moved his family to Ringgold County, Iowa, and improved a farm south of Mount Ayr. Five children came to this union, the three girls dying in infancy. The two boys were William A. and Nelson Rankin McClanahan (of Aberdeen, South Dakota).

      In early life he made a profession of religion and united with the United Presbyterian Church of Cedar Creek, Illinois and was always an active member of the church. He was a charter member and an elder of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church and served as elder a number of years in the Mount Ayr United Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death, he held his membership in the West Side United Presbyterian Church of Monmouth, Illinois.

      Mrs. Belle McClanahan died November 20, 1893. On May 25, 1896, he was married again to Mrs. Elizabeth McCreary at Cedar Creek parsonage, Warren County, Illinois, by her pastor. They lived most of the time in Warren County, Illinois, until her death which took place October 31, 1920. After that time he made his home with his two sons.

      Monroe Robentile McClanahan was born in Brown County, Ohio, March 7th, 1844 and died at Caldwell, Kan., December 3, 1923.

      When eleven years old the family moved to Monmouth, Ill. In 1864 he volunteered as a soldier in the Civil War and served until the end of the war and then returned to Monmouth, Ill.

      On September 19, 1865, he was married to Sarah Isabelle Struthers, and settled on a farm adjoining Alexis, Ill. In 1872, he moved to Ringgold county, Iowa, and improved a farm south of Mt. Ayr. Five children came to this union--three dying in infancy. Two remain --W. A., of Ringgold Kan., and N. R. of Aberdeen, S. Dak.

      Mrs. McClanahan died Nov. 20, 1893. On May 25, 1896 he married again to Mrs. Elizabeth McCreary at Cedar Creek parsonage, Warren county, Illinois, by her pastor, Rev. Wm. Donaldson.       Dr. and Mrs. W. A. McClanahan, of Caldwell, Kan., at whose home Mr. McClanahan spent the last months of his life, accompanied the remains to Mouth Ayr. They were joined at Tingley by N. R. McClanahan of Aberdeen, S. D., and Rev. Stewart of Oskaloosa. Ed and John Rankin and Rev. John Currie, of Tarkio, Mo., arrived yesterday morning to attend the funeral.

      E1 Dr. William A. McClanahan, born January 26, 1867, died Apr 17, 1947; married Emma J. Thompson (sister of Tarkio's President); Emma died December 19, 1932 in Little Rock, Arkansas; no children.

      E2 Nelson Rankin McClanahan, born September 16, 1877 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, died June 6, 1945 in Aberdeen, South Dakota; married December 21, 1904 in Mina, South Dakota Ida Blanche Lewis, born April 15, 1870 in Dane County, Wisconsin, died September 4, 1959 in Columbus, Ohio.
      Three other children, all girls, died in infancy.
