  • Notes
    • Catherine Madison is identified as a daughter of Humphrey Madison, who died in 1756, in the following Chalkley's record:

Page 304.--15th May, 1770. John Madison's bond (with Thomas Madison) as guardian to Catherine Madison, orphan of Humphrey Madison.

Catherine Madison appears to have been married three times: 1st, on 15 May 1770 to Capt. Robert McClanahan, who was killed in the Battle of Point Pleasant in October 1774; 2nd, in abt. 1775, to a Robert Poage (William Poague {posthumus child Wm Poague,Jr.}) {NAMED AS CATHERINE POAGUE FOR MARRIAGE TO WM. ARBUCKLE}; and 3rd, to William Arbuckle on 11 November 1779 in Botetourt County, Virginia [Source: "Early Marriages, Wills and Some Revolutionary War Records, Botetourt County, Virginia", by Anne Lowry Worrell, pg. 4]. In her marriage record in Botetourt County, she is listed as "Katerine Poague", indicating a probable prior marriage to a Poage, but whether it was a Robert Poage or another Poage that was her 2nd husband cannot be determined in Augusta or Botetourt records (perhaps the record is in a neighboring County). Additional research and sources are needed.

Comments (Catherine Madison b. 1754 Augusta County, Virginia Colony d. 1818 Mason County, Virginia): Hi there, I'm an Arbuckle descendant & I wanted to let you know of an error that I found on Catherine Madison. You have her as married to Wm. Arbuckle first. She was married to Robert McClenehan before William Arbuckle. She married William in 1779. Robert McC died in the battle of Pt. Pleasant at Ft. Randolph, VA now WVA and is heavily noted in that area. Hope this helps. Please email me if you want more information on Catherine Madison and William Arbuckle.

      Don McClanahan

My ggg grandfather Capt. Robert McClanahan Jr. (McClenachan) married Catherine Madison on 5/15/1770. Robert was killed in the Battle of Point Pleasant on 10/10/1774. Catherine & Robert had two sons, Robert 3rd and my gg grandfather John. After Robert?s death, Catherine married William Poage in 1/9/1777. I assume something happened to William because at age 23, she married William Arbuckle in 1779. I understand that she died 7/18/1818 and is buried in Mason County, W. Va.

I am applying for membership to an organization related to James Madison and I need primary proof (copies of original documents) proving Catherine was married to Robert Jr., that Humphrey Madison was Catherine?s father and that Mary Dickenson was Humphrey?s wife. If anyone has or knows where I can obtain copies of original documents I would appreciate it if you would contact me or post the information to this web site. I would also be interest in addition information such as that listed above.
I think I can agree on the Wiki entries, even though I would not guarantee any of them. There are some really great researchers and then there are some that no matter how much proof you send them they stick to what they have LOL! I have a 3rd cousin like that. Are you related to the Arbuckle side or just McClanahan's? Also are you aware that McClanahan is a variation or McClelland and McClenathan? I have a great connection to that name, if you want to contact her she is very helpful. Her name is Nancy McClelland Feroe. The family runs alongside with Arbuckle's from Scotland all the way out on the Trail of Tears and probably further. I have one early marriage between the two families and if I remember what she told me correctly they seem to corrolate with this group as well. I have not really researched them, but do have some info that I just happened to collect along the way, trying to tie them to my Arbuckles.
Let me know if you want her email. Also I have pictures from Point Pleasant WV that I took in regards to McClanahan and Arbuckles I can send you some if you'd like.
      All the best,
      Barb Bonomini
