Thomas Gunn III was supposedly born in Virginia to Sarah Boatwright and Thomas Gunn II. He apparently moved from Virginia to North Carilina about 1791. He signed his will on 13 Novemeber 1800 and died in Caswell County, NC with a large estate including 740 acres of land. He supposedly married (1) Susannah Burnett (2) Sarah Davenport (3) Ann Worsham (4) Eleanor "Nelly" Alverson... spousal information cannot be completely verified.

In 1780, Thomas Gunn III was drafted into service by the State of Virginia in the Revolutionary War, but his son, Starling Gunn, went in his stead. Starling's pension application stated that he was living in Amelia Co., VA at that time.

Thomas Gunn III has been established as a DAR Patriot for Revolutionary War service. His eldest two sons were the only children old enough to actively serve in the Revolutionary War. Nothing is known about the oldest son, Elisha, except that he evidently died without heirs before his father's will was written in November 1800. The second son of Thomas Gunn III, Sterling Gunn, served with distinction in the Revolutionary War.

According to Wikipedia, The battle of YORKTOWN commenced with a canon shot fired by General George Washington in 1781. Starling Gunn was only 17 years old at that time, and entered service in place of his father Thomas Gunn 9 months earlier. He was in the Artillery and as he recollects and swears to in his declaration for pension that he was "digging trenches and building the fort at Yorktown". He also states "was in the fort and assisted in firing the first Gun that he recollects to have been fired upon the Enemy.

This memorial is a duplicate and is incorrect.Thomas Gunn, Jr. (ca. 1738 VA - 1800 NC) and Family -- Biographical Notes states that 'Starling Gunn and his wifewere apparently buried near the old log church but were RE-INTERRED in the Yanceyville Methodist Church cemetery in 1950.RE-INTERRED means reburied. This proves that not only the gravestones were moved but the casket/bodies were reburied.

Soil From Grave of Starling Gunn At Mt. Vernon The Bee (Danville, Virginia) 29 March 1928 (Page 1).

The tree from Yorktown which was recently planted near the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon by the Daughters of the American Revolution is taking root in soil, part of which was removed from the grave of Starling Gunn in Caswell county.
When this article was published, Starling Gunn's grave was in the Gunn Family Cemetey north of Yanceyville. Later, his great great grandson, Johnnie Oliver Gunn, had the gravestone moved to the Yanceyville United Methodist Church cemetery in Yanceyville.
