John Reynolds was first of my family to arrive in America from England. His name is noted on a monument to 60 original settlers of Watertown Massachusetts (5 miles west of Cambridge) who arrived there in 1630 with Puritan leader Governor Saltonstall. He is also on another monument as a founder of Greenwich Connecticut.
John Reynolds was reportedly born May 1, 1612 in Boxford, Suffolk, England, and died after 1651 (possibly July 18, 1660) in Greenwich or Stamford Connecticut. He was admitted as a Freeman of Watertown on May 6, 1635, which was necessary to vote and hold office. It required being a landholder and a member of Watertown church.
John?s wife Sarah Chesterfield arrived on the ship Elizabeth from Ipswich in 1634 at age 20, already married (she is Sarah Reynolds on the ship records). In 1636, John and Sarah moved with several other settlers, including John?s brother Robert, to Weathersfield, Connecticut. Sarah died August 21, 1657.
John?s father, George, was born about 1563 in county Kent, England, married in 1584 to Thomasyn Church, and died 1634 in London. George?s father Christopher Reynolds, the first known of the family, was born between 1527 and 1530 in Kent. He married about 1554 and settled in London where he and his brother Nathaniel and his seven sons engaged in trade and commerce. Robert, who also emigrated to New England, was born about 1587-1590 and married Mary Pulleyne. He died in Boston on April 27, 1658 and his son Nathaniel moved to Bristol, Rhode Island, where a statue of his son Joseph bears the Reynolds coat of arms with the shield of a squire (suggesting the family?s high standing in England).
In the summer of 1641 John Reynolds was one of 28 men who volunteered as pioneer settlers of Stamford, using corn to buy 11 acres from the Dutch New Haven Colony (which did not join Connecticut until 1664) on the extreme west section of town, near Old Greenwich, (now Sound Beach).
John and Sarah had three children: Elizabeth born about 1635, John Jr. born about 1636 in Wethersfield, and Jonathan born about 1638.

The family of John2 and Judah (Palmer) Reynolds apparently dates about en years later than that of his brother Jonathan. All of the children of both brothers were born in Sound Beach (then Stamford) and Greenwich, Conn. The mention of the ages of the children of Jonathan2 in the settlement of his estate in 1673 enables us to set the years of their birth. But the following children of John and Judah, and possibly others who may have died in infancy, are arranged in order of birth, but the dates of birth are not wholly reliable:
      i. John 'The Cooper' Reynolds 9 was born in 1670 in Sound Beach Or Greenwich, CT6 and died in Dec 1732 in Sound Beach Or Greenwich, CT at age 62.
ii. Judith Reynolds was born about 1672 and died after 1734.
iii. James Reynolds 6 was born in 1674 in Greenwich, CT, died on 14 Feb 1767 in Amenia, Dutchess Co, NY at age 93, and was buried in Smithfield Burying Ground, Dutchess Co, NY.
      v. Jonathan Reynolds 9 was born in 1682 in Greenwich, CT and died in 1709 in Greenwich, CT at age 27.
vi. Joshua Reynolds 9 was born about 1685 in Greenwich, CT and died in 1765 about age 80
vii. David Reynolds 9 was born about 1687 in Greenwich, CT and died in 1750 in Greenwich, CT about age 63. David married Penelope Wright about 1705 in Prob Oyster Bay, L.I., NY. Penelope was born about 1690. David next married Mary Mead, daughter of Joseph Mead and Sarah Reynolds, after 1709. Mary was born about 1690.

      John Reynolds, Jr. (3)
      1. Biographical notes: Born about 1638/9 at (probably) Wethersfield, Connecticut. Died between 8 November and 17 December 1701 at Fairfield/Greenwich, Connecticut.
      2. Wife: Judith ?Judah? Palmer Born about 1648. Died 1702. Daughter of William/Henry and Judith (Feake) Palmer. Married John Reynolds about 1668 at Greenwich, Connecticut. After the death of her father, William Palmer, Judith and her siblings moved with her mother to Greenwich, Connecticut, where she had relatives. Judith (Feake) Palmer eventually married (2nd), as his 3rd wife, Jeffrey Ferris (d. 1666). She married (3rd) John Bowers about 1667. After Judith (Feake)(Palmer)(Ferris) Bowers died, John Bowers married Hannah (?) Knapp, widow of Joshua Knapp, whose daughter, Ruth Knapp, married Deacon John Reynolds (son of Jonathan Reynolds) and whose son, Joshua Knapp, Jr., married Elizabeth Reynolds on 16 March 1687. So, John Bowers had three step children who married into the Reynolds family.
      3. Children:
      a. John Reynolds, III: (31) Born about 1670. Died December 1732. Was employed as a cooper.
