Civil War Confederate Soldier. "Among the many noble souls who have freely and willingly given up their lives for their country's honor, may be mentioned H. Thomas Pendleton, of the 2d Company Richmond Howitzers, who fell on the bloody and hard-fought field of Gettysburg, Pa., on the 3d of July. He was beloved by the whole company, and by all who knew him, for his many excellent qualities. He was a dutiful and obedient son, a loving and devoted brother, a kind and obliging friend, and one of the best soldiers in the proud army of Northern Virginia. He was nobly discharging his duty at his gun when the messenger of death struck him, and when his brave comrades came to his assistance his last words were, "Tell my mother I died doing my duty."
Pendleton had enlisted on June 14, 1861 as a Private. As his Richmond Daily Dispatch obituary states above, he was killed-in-action during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.
