      Published Obituary, Raleigh State Chronicle

STAMPS, Capt. Edward R., April 30, 1891--his 47th birthday--at the residence of his brother-in-law, Hon. George Howard, in Tarboro. Three weeks ago he went to Tarboro to attend a meeting of the Albermarle Presbytery. He had been previously afflicted with a long attack of the grip, which had deprived him of the free use of his legs, and he had been forced to walk with a cane. Standing in a store in Tarboro, he fell, without warning, to the floor, partially paralyzed, and had since been growing worse until his death. His remains were brought to Raleigh and interred.

He had been called to responsible positions--president of the State National Bank, president of the board of directors of the Penitentiary, and other positions--and more than once the Democratic party had called upon him to hold up its banner as a candidate for the General Assembly. He was a leading elder in the Presbyterian church. The death of Capt. Stamps is a great loss to Raleigh.

Capt. Stamps was born in Mecklenburg Co., Va., April 30, 1844, and was just 47 years old, having died on his birthday. His father, Dr. W. L. Stamps, removed when he was quite young to Milton, Caswell County. He entered the war soon after its commencement, at the age of 17 enlisting in a Virginia battery of artillery and serving throughout with distinguished gallantry. He afterward was graduated at Hampton-Sydney College with high honors and soon thereafter began the study of law under his brother-in-law, Judge George Howard of Tarboro. He practiced law for some years in Wilson and also was the editor of the Tarboro Southerner for several years.

In 1875 he removed to Raleigh, and in January, 1876, he married Miss Bettie Williams, daughter of the late John G. Williams. In 1876, he formed a law partnership with R.T. Gray that subsisted until 1886, when Judge George Strong became a member of the firm. In 1877 Gov. A.B. Vance appointed him a director of the Penitentiary, and its board elected him president. This position he held until 1889, under the administrations of both Jarvis and Scales. In 1883 he was elected president of the state National Bank at the solicitation of the comptroller of the Treasury and held the position for several years.

At the time of his death he had at his bedside his wife and sisters and brothers. Capt. Stamps leaves a wife and three children--E.R. Stamps, Jr., aged about 5, and Misses Miriam, aged about 11, an[d] Elise, about 9 years old. The funeral services were conducted at First Presbyterian Church. The interment was at Oakwood Cemetery.
