      William Barksdale was a planter and a buyer and seller of land, chiefly in Albermarle Count;y on the south fork of the Rivanna River, later known as Mechum's River, though it is referred to in the early records of the county as Michem, Michon, and so forth. The Rev. Edgard Woods, in his history of the county, states that William's home-site was north of Hydraulic Mills. Deeds in Caroline Co., Albermarle Co.
      8 Oct 1778, William Barksdale and Anne, his wife, of Albermarle Co., sold to Sam'l. Carr, 43 a. more or less, on north side of Lickinghole Creek. [Alb Co., DBVII/251]

      In 1785 William Barksdale executed a Deed of Gift, 'taking into consideration the circumstances of my children for divers good causes and considerations, but more particularly for the fatherly love and affection which I bear my said children, am induced to make them the following gives." He mentions son-in-law, John Douglas, grandson, Achilles and Douglas, "sons of my son, Nathan Barksdale; son-in-law, Alexander Fretwell, son, Goodman Barksdale; son, Samuel Barksdale; son-in-law, William Warwick; son, Jonathan Barksdale; dau, Lucy; son, Nelson; and dau Elizabeth.       William Barksdale wrote his will on 11 Jun 1796. He mentions his first wife's children. i.e. Mary 25 May 1746 m. John Douglas; Nathan Barksdale, b 13 May 1748; Nancy Barksdale, b 15 Sep 1750 m. Alexander Fretwell; Goodman Barksdale 13 Mar 1753; William Barksdale b 23 May 1755d aft 1785unm; Dabney Barksdale b Sep 29, 1757, d. ante 1785; unm.; Samuel Barksdale, b 25 Oct 1759; Sarah Barksdale b 11 Jan 1762; m. in Albermarle 17 Jan 1783, William Warwick; Jonathan Barksdale b 16 Aug 1765; Lucy Barksdale b 25 Sep 1768; m in Albermarle Co., VA 24 Aug 1791 to Richard Burch. William Barksdale m. 2nd, probably in Albermarle Co., VA ante 8 Oct 1778, as by the land records, supra, Anne (?). No data has been found as to her surname. "Wm. died in 1796 and some years later his widow married Philip Day." 4 children were born to William and Anne. Nelson, b 14 May 1781; Elizabeth b 20 Jan 1783; m. Charles Overstreet. Proof of her identity is found in a deed recorded 1 Jun 1812 mentioning: 'Charles Overstreet and Elizabeth, his wife, formerly Elizabeth Barksdale." Hudson Barksdale, b 10 nOov 1786; and John Hickerson Barksdale, b 15 Jul 1791.
