HATTIE HOBDY was the 6th of 7 children born to William Donalson Hobdy, 1829-1876, and Rebecca Ann Hargis, 1838-1908, of Sumner County, TN. Her parents married there April 14, 1857. Hattie's father died when she was only 7 years old but left his family well provided for, and stated in his Will that he desired "the finest education" for his children.
Hattie's grandparents were William Hobdy (son of Robert Hobdy and Talitha Cotton) and Elizabeth Scruggs (daughter of Drury Edward Scruggs, Sr. and Elizabeth Tabb).
Her grandparents had owned more than 250 acres of land around the Caney and Sulfur Forks of Drake's Creek. Her grandfather farmed and ran both a Mill and a Still. Hattie never knew them but grew up in their house near the Hobdy family graveyard where they are buried.
Hattie's siblings were:
1. Eliza, 1858-1924, m. Henry Cornelius Mayes
2. William "Willie", 1860-1926, a Physician, m. Kora Tucker and moved to Hamilton Co. Texas
3. Thomas, 1863-1868
4. Moore Cotton, 1864-1923, m. Ada Fowler. Both Moore and Ada were Teachers in the Portland area of Sumner Co.
5. Nannie, 1866-1895, m. Marcus Bates Fowler
6. Fountain Edward, 1871-1937, a Physician in Portland, TN, m. Addie Sarver
Hattie married the Rev. John Lewis Hill, May 15, 1892. Their families attended the same church. John was a minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a professor at their College in Princeton, KY. They moved around Kentucky and Ohio as John was assigned to minister at different churches. He was also the author of several books. By 1920, they had divorced. John died in 1936.
(Go to John's Link in this cemetery to read his biography).
They had two sons, born during their years at the Cumberland Presbyterian College in Princeton, KY:
Robert D. Hill, b. 1895, a gifted concert violinist, who never married, d. 1961 in Memphis, TN after being struck by a bus.
Hugh Bennett Hill, b. 1898, was a professional singer in early adulthood and later a realtor. Hugh was married 3 times and had 1 child by each wife. He died 1971 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
After her divorce, Hattie spent the rest of her life living with either her sons Robert and Hugh, or her brother, Dr. Fountain Hobdy. A classically trained pianist, she taught piano. Hattie died just a week before her 91st birthday. Even though they had been divorced for 40 years, it was her wish to be buried beside John in this Hill Family Plot.
