Thomas Carter, Sr. of Goochland County, Virginia was married three times. There is documentation that the first two children were from the first wife. Based on naming patterns, I think the third child was also from the first wife. It is just guess-work for which wife the other children were from.

Children of Thomas Carter, Jr. and Mary Killypatrick, his wife, are Mary, m. 1756 Thomas Dawson; Thomas A. m. 1 Lucy Farris, 2nd Elizabeth Stubbs; John m. 1 Lucy ? 2nd Winifred Anthony; Susannah m. 1760 Joseph Jackson; Josiah Carter (1745-1822) m. 1771 Mary Anthony; Baynes; Judith m. 1770 David Webster.
Josiah Carter was born in Goochland Co., Va. 10 Feb 1745, the third known son of Thomas Carter, Jr. and his wife, Mary Killypatrick. He grew up on the family land holdings in the Licking Hole District of Goochland Co., VA and doubtless knew Joseph Anthony and his family, who were associated with the Dover/Licking Hole Church of Goochland Co. Josiah's family Bible has recently been located, which adds greatly to the knowledge about his family. He was left land by his father's 1763 Will in Goochland Co., VA, which is connected to that of his brother, John. That this Josiah Carter is the same Josiah named in the will of Thomas Carter, Jr. of Goochland Co., Va. is proven by his intimate association with two of the other brothers, John and Baynes, who were also named as sons in the will. Josiah also went to Georgia about the same time as all of his brothers mentioned in the Will, John, Baynes and Thomas, though it is possible that the Baynes Carter mentioned in the 1805 Warren Co., Ga. Tax Digest is a nephew and not a brother.l [yes] Baynes, the son, is found in Halifax and Pittsylvania Co., VA] During the early 1770's Josiah Carter was living in close proximity with his two younger brothers, John and Baynes in Pittsylvania Co.

    3. [S190] Randolph Malone, Thomas Carter of Goochland Sr. .
Oct 9, 1772 Joseph Carter, Josiah's and Mary Anthony Carter's eldest child was born in Pittsylvania Co., Va. Elizabeth, their eldest daughter was born 17 May 1774, in Pittsylvania Co., and Sarah, 17 January 1776. Daughter Mary was born in Henry Co., 1 Apr 1777, and that same year Josiah bought land from Thomas Randolph on Reed Creek at the mouth of what is now Smith River where later, he built a grist mill. This land is located near the intersection of U. S. Route 220 and Virginia State Highway 57, between Bassett and Collinsville, Virginia. An old photograph taken about 1920 shows the old grist mill rebuilt on Reedy Creek. 30 Aug 1777 Josiah and Baynes as well as James and Joseph Anthony took the Oath of Allegiance in Henry Co. to protect Virginia with their lives against King George III.
