Joe Carter
Notes on The Brooklyn Carter's and the Elmo Tavern Theoderick Carter, III , great-great
grandfather of Nathaniel H. Wooding, wrote a Will dated July 1805, Book 7 page 152. He did not mention his homeplace.
Alexander Carter, a brother of Nathaniel Carter, wrote a Will dated January 11 1826. The following is extracted from it "At the death of my wife my will is that my lands consisting of three tracts, two in Halifax and one in Pittsylvania, shall be sold in the most advisable manner and the money arising from such sale together with my Negroes and every particle of my estate except my home, which was willed to me by my father ...... my home I give to my son Theoderick." Samuel Carter's will dated February 1836 is in Will Book 17, page 597. Item 4," I lend to my wife the tract of land whereon I live during her life and at her death I give to my son Philemon." Philemon B. Carter sold to Thomas Haynie 100 acres of land for $ 2,250.00 on September 24, 1860. References the Description are to the Danville Road, Carter's Mill Road and Marable's Line fence. A 30 by 40- foot burial ground is reserved.
In Respect to Samuel Carter operating a Tavern in Court Orders Minute Book I, page 140, in year 1821, he is granted permission to keep a house of private entertainment. This permission was renewed a number of times.

Nat Wooding OK, now I see. I have a copy of that picture of my grandmother. Within the kids of my generation, we called her "Woogin" which came about when her first grandchild was told to call her "Mrs Wooding" and he mispronounced it. Her husband, Robert (Rob) died 30 May 1943 and was born near Straigtstone in Pittsylvania Co., not Halifax. I, Nathaniel Henry Wooding Jr should be listed as my father's other and eldest son. My father The Rev. Nathaniel Henry Wooding, MD, is listed as half brother to Tommie; she was the only child of Rob and his first wife Virginia Emmons of Pearisburg. I don't know the story but both mother and child became ill and died. He wrote home to have one of his sisters sent out to help while his wife and child were ill but the story goes that the two families sent out the available Carter girl and so I am here to write this.
