    • Paul joined the Revolutionary War cause at 16 and a half years old. He fought in the Battles of Guilford Court House under Maj. Gen. Greene and Green Spring under the Marquis de Lafayette in March and July 1781 respectively. His service is memorialized by his wife on his tombstone. He was educated at Hampden-Sydney College and at the College of William and Mary. He later studied law under Attorney-General Randolph, was a member of the VA Senate where he served as Speaker for one day, and became a Judge of the General Court of VA.

      He was married on 24 Aug 1786 to Mildred Howell Coles. She was buried at Berry Hill Cem. near Paul's tomb many years later. Upon Paul's death she had an inscription written on his tombstone which outlines his service to the Nation.

      The family resided at "Sylvan Hill" in Charlotte Co., VA.
