Col. Carrington was born at "Mulberry Hill" and schooled at the Hampden-Sydney College. He served and was wounded as a teenager during the Revolution. His residence in Charlotte County was named "Edgehill" where he and Jane Watkins had four children, three of whom lived into adulthood. Their son, Thomas Read Carrington, died as a child. In addition to serving as a Magistrate, Col. Carrington served on the Board of Trustees for the Hampden-Sydney College. He named his son-in-law, John McPhail, as his executor.
Inscription:
He was a soldier of the Revolution, Commenced his military services at the age of 15. At 19, while attached to Col. Lee's Legion as a cadet receiving neither pay or clothes, he fought bravely at the battle of Eutaw where he was wounded. For more than 50 years he discharged the duties of Magistrate with a firmness, fidelity & ability never surpassed. He was economical upon principle yet munificent in his liberality towards any enterprise. Promotive of the honor or welfare of his native state: For he was a Virginian in all his feelings. He was honest and punctual in all his dealings. As parent he was ever fond: As a friend ever true: He met death with firmness not without the hope of a joyful resurrection.
