Sgt. Frederick Carter was born February 5, 1834 in Henry, Alabama to parents Giles Carter (1786-1864) and Alice Messer (1787-1855). He was the fifth of his parents' nine children. He married Martha Emily Anderson on January 8, 1854 in Randolph, Georgia. Together they had eleven children. The couple moved to Alabama sometime in the 1850s. On March 3, 1862, Frederick Carter enlisted in Company G of the Alabama 22 Infantry regiment in Otho, Alabama. This regiment later was consolidated into the 39th infantry. During the war he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was discharged from service on May 8, 1865. After the war ended the family moved to Panola County, Texas. The 1870 census states that Frederick Carter is living in Panola, working as a farmer and that his personal estate is valued at approximately $580. By 1880 the family had moved to Wonders Beat, Nacogdoches, Texas. On September 29, 1880 his wife Martha Emily Anderson passed away. Five years later in 1885, Frederick Carter married Carmelia Watkins and together they had two sons Edgar and Robert. Frederick Carter passed away on March 5, 1905 in Garrison, Texas. He is buried with a confederate army tombstone in Cold Springs Texas.

      His yDNA haplogroup is Q-242.
