      Mr. Carter was educated at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He became the surveyor of Audrain county, MO, then was the civil engineer engaged to locate several railroad lines in that county. In 1881 he moved his family to St. Louis where he eventually became a powerful commission merchant in grain & stock. The family lived at #5 Portland Place. On 8 October 1870 he married Mary Louise Lupton
