Notes |
- Alma Carter Parry was born in the Carter House on November 7, 1871, as the first surviving child and only daughter of Col. Moscow Branch Carter and his second wife, America V. Cattles Carter. Alma graduated from Bellwood Seminary/ Kentucky Presbyterian Normal School in Anchorage, Kentucky in 1889.
She began teaching piano in the Brentwood area, where she met Mr. Walter Tillman Parry. She married him at the then-First Presbyterian Church at Five Points in Franklin on December 16, 1891, with the wedding supper following at the Carter House. Since the groom was suffering from flu that night, the newlyweds spent their wedding night at the bride's house!
Their first child, Mary Orlena Parry, was born on their third wedding anniversary, Dec. 16, 1894. Their first son, Walter Tillman Parry Jr. was born May 2, 1897. Their third child, Lucy Lenore Parry, was born May 7, 1900. All three children were christened at their Spring Hill farm July 6, 1900 by Presbyterian minister Rev. Hardin.
Soon after, the family moved to a farm at the corner of Columbia Pike and Henpeck Lane. Alma Parry had a congenital heart defect and she died suddenly at home on February 27, 1905, leaving her three young children motherless. The Parry farm adjoined the farm of Lena Carter Gillespie, Alma's half-sister. Lena Carter Gillespie, who had been a child in the Carter House at the time of the Battle of Franklin, took on a mothering role for her nieces and nephew until her own death in 1930.
