At the age of 26, he married Miss Martha Dyer, daughter of George Dyer and Rachel Dalton. They resided in the Leatherwood section of Henry County, VA, and raised a large and exceedingly successful family, including one set of twins, their namesakes, Lewis Jr and his sister Martha. Lewis Sr and his wife Martha took care of Martha's widowed mother Rachel Dalton Dyer until she passed away in 1864 at age 104, then Lewis was widowed in 1876. In the 1880 census, Thomas Marshall Gravely and family are living with their widowed, elderly father. On May 11, 1884, age 88, Lewis Gravely passed on of "old age." (#47251670) Rachel Martha "Patsy" Dyer was born to George Dyer and Rachel Dalton in 1800 and is named in her father's will of 1823. She lived her life in the Leatherwood Section of Henry County, Virginia, and was the namesake of her mother and possibly of Martha "Patsy" Henry Fontaine (1755 - 1818) the daughter of Patrick Henry who was mistress of neighboring Leatherwood Plantation. On 19 Dec 1822, George Dyer gave permission for Martha to marry Lewis Gravely. Witness of the marriage was Elder Arnold Walker, who, at that time was married to Eleanor Gravely, Lewis' sister. Lewis and Martha raised a large family and cared for Rachel Dalton Dyer, Martha's mother, until she passed away in 1862. The 1850 census shows Col. Joseph Martin as the Gravely's next neighbor. Martha passed away on 24 Oct 1876 at the age of 76 of unknown cause.
