- SPIRIT OF JEFFERSON FARMER'S ADVOCATE, Nov. 3, 1955
DEATHS
JOHN MONCURE DANIEL
.....The news came to Charles Town on Tuesday afternoon that John Moncure Daniel, a native of Jefferson County, W. Va., had passed away that morning at Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C. Mr. Daniel had been ill for less than three weeks. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marguerite Williams Daniel of Alexandria, Va., a daughter, Margaret, of Washington D.C., a son, Richard Micou, of Swarthmore, Pa., a daughter, Anne, Mrs. Fletcher S. Cater of Dublin, Georgia, and a son, John Moncure Jr., of Richmond, Va.
.....Mr. Daniel was born May 26, 1883, on the family farm near Charles Town, the fourth of six children. He was the son of John Moncure Daniel and Anne Elizabeth Leavell, who resided in Jefferson County, near Charles Town. Both were members of old and prominent families; the Leavell family long residents in Jefferson County and the Daniel family in Charlotte County, Va. He attended the Old Academy in Charles Town until sixteen years of age, when he entered the Episcopal High School at Alexandria, Va. and there remained as student, Secretary to the Headmaster, Treasurer, Business Manager, and and as Master until his death on November 1, 1955.
.....Few men have been actuated by as high principles of Christian manhood, or possessed of so strong a character, or expended himself for others so unselfishly as Mr. Daniel. The many boys who attended his classes and daily came under his influence, now successful men and scattered over many states, bear testimony to his Christian influence.
.....A recent article in the "E.H.S.," the school paper, states that, "Mr. Daniel speedily showed a marked talent as an instructor in history and by 1905 was heading that department". Besides his function as head of the history department, Mr. Daniel has served most capably until 1953 as the treasurer and Business Manager for the school. In June 1953 the Board of Trustees ordered the preparation of a suitable resolution to be presented to Mr. Daniel in recognition and appreciation of his continuing devotion and service to the High School for over half a century.
.....Mr. Daniel, in addition to the members of his immediate family and five grandchildren, is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Miss Elizabeth Daniel of 401 Samuel Street, Charles Town, Miss Mary Mildred Daniel of Berkeley Springs, W. Va., William A. Daniel of Dickerson, Md. and Francis W. Daniel at the old home near Charles Town.
.....The funeral service was conducted by the Right Reverend Frederick Goodwin
