I notice that on one of the Carter web pages recommended here the wife of John Carter who died in Henrico Co. in 1785 is named as Elizabeth (Sherwood?) Unknown. However an Albemarle Co. deed dated 12 Nov. 1760 shows that she was the daughter of John Gannaway Sr.:

" Jno. Gannaway, Sr. to Theodorick Carter, son of John Carter of Henrico Co....love for Theodorick Carter, grandson..."

John and Elizabeth's son Jacob named one of his children Elizabeth Gannaway Carter (she was mentioned in John's 1785 will as his granddaughter Betsy Gannaway Carter), and another of Jacob's descendants in Henrico Co. was named John Carter Gannaway Epes.

    3. [S57] Colonial Henrico Marriages 1680-1808.
Four Carter Marriages listed from 1792 to 1808 including John Carter and Jane Gathright. Wit Mat. Hobson; Richard Carter and Susanna Marion Price, dau of John Price who is surety; Theodorick Carter and Frances Hobson, who consents. William Carter and Betsey Hobson
Jacob stands Witness for his brother's marriage to Betsey Hobson. Sur. Matthew Hobson:

These marriages in Henrico are surely those of John of Theodorick and his family; the Hobsons are intermarried to the Carters; and the Prices to the Carters for generations.
