SARAH WYNN SMITH (JOHNSON) POWELL, or "Sally,", the wife of DAVID POWELL
is the daughter of a MOSES JOHNSON who died ca. 1781 and his wife SUSANNAH _____

This "Sally" is the mother of JOHNSON POWELL, ALLEN POWELL, SR. and SUSANNAH POWELL. Johnson Powell died without any known heirs and was taken by his nephew Allen Powell Jr. up to his, the nephew's, home county of Choctaw County and buried his uncle in a small cemetery where the nephew's father Allen Powell, Sr. is buried. (The small cemetery is overgrown with large trees and has some of the oldest marked graves in what is today Montgomery County, Mississippi.) Allen Powell, Sr. had two sons, David Johnson Powell and Allen Powell, Jr. D. J. Powell had one daughter, but Allen Powell, Jr. and his wife did not have any children. However, Allen Jr. and his wife raised the daughter of his brother after the death of her parents and also raised William Wiley Johnson, the youngest son of his (Allen Powell, Jr.)'s, 2nd cousin, Allen Johnson [See previous messages in thread].

Susannah Powell, daughter of David and Sarah Wynn Smith (Johnson) Powell, was born ca. 1798 and died 13 Nov. 1852). She married THOMAS CARTER (ca. 1765-Feb. 1855) and had several children. She and her husband and family are the Carters who are show listed in the household of Johnson Powell in the 1850 Census.

The Sally Powell named in Smith Johnson's Will dated 13 Dec 1803 and
recorded 7 Jan 1806 in Oglethorpe Co. GA is the same person that married:
David Powell Jr. and Sarah Winn Smith Johnson married 17 Jan 1791 in Halifax
Co. VA. David Powell Jr. was likely the son of David Powell who was the son
of Edward & Elizabeth Powell of Halifax Co. VA. Edward Powell's Will is
dated of Halifax Co. VA. dated 1 Jul 1766 and recorded at Halifax Co. Court
      16 Sep 1773.

The Will of Moses Johnson states he was the son of Smith and Margaret Winn
Johnson of Halifax Co VA. Moses names his daughter: Sally (Sarah) Winn
Smith Johnson and his son, Benjamin Smith Johnson.

      *Will Book 1 1773-1783 Halifax Co VA (Chiarito); p. 92; p. 381; Moses
      Johnson; Will dated 17 Oct 1781; wife, Susannah; dau., Sally Smith Johnson;
son, Benjamin Smith Johnson; Exr.."my well beloved father Smith Johnson".
      signed: Moses (x) Johnson

The 1850 Copiah Co MS Census has 2 of David and Sarah W. S. Johnson Powell
Jr.'s children. I have more documentation that Johnson Powell and Susanna
(Anna) Powell Carter were the children of David and Sarah W.S. Johnson.
There are no records to prove that Johnson Powell married and it is believed
that he did not have any descendants.

*p. 229 B Copiah Co MS: #295 Johnson Powell 47 yrs. Planter VA
      Thomas Carter 75 yrs. VA
      " Anna" Carter 52 yrs. b. VA

Johnson Powell was more likely than not born in Halifax Co VA and the 1850
census states that Susanna (Anna) Winn Powell Carter was born in VA, also.
Susanna (Anna) more likely than not married Thomas Carter in Halifax Co. VA.
