Info on this family from June Carter Cottrell's 5 Oct 1996 e-mail. She listed the descendants of Charles Powell CARTER through his son Giles CARTER & Magdalene DuBose and their son James. They are as I've listed them in this database. I haven't yet confirmed where they fit into my CARTER family. Joy Carter Johnstone e-mail 28 Sep 2005 Joy and I agreed that we'd consider Charles Powell Carter to be the son of Giles II and Mary -- until we learn something different. He is her ancestor. I think it's more likely that he is Giles & Mary's grandson, but I have absolutely no proof. Joy suggests that the Charles who witnessed the 1781 will of John CARTER might be Charles Powell. No way!! Charles P. must have been born about 1740; the other one was born about 1770. Joy Carter Johnstone's 22 Jan 2000 e-mail: Family legend is that Giles II & Mary (POVALL) CARTER had a son, Charles Powell/Povall CARTER, who went to SC by way of NC, He arrived in SC without a wife but with son Giles and daughters Mary and Margaret. Joy knows that Charles P. was in the Lynches Creek area of SC by 1767. She says that in her Carter family the firstborn sons are nearly alway named Giles or Charles Powell. Joy lists the descendants of Giles CARTER & Magdalene DuBOSE through their son Charles Powell CARTER & Susan INGRAM. From a record in the Cartersville SC Baptist Church: "Although said to have come from Virginia, the first CARTER known to have settled in South Carolina was Charles Powell CARTER who obtained 100 acres of land from the Deputy Surveyor May 18 1767. He is again listed as having furnished the Continental Army with 500 lbs. of beef during the Revolutionary War. "The 1790 census lists him as Charles CARTER of Darlington District with 2 males over 16 years and 8 females. Records of plats made to Charles CARTER and to Giles may be seen at the Archives in Columbia, SC." One Rev. War record lists him as Povall Charles CARTER. Another researcher claims that Charles P. left other sons in Virginia.
